Hi all:
I've combed the archives for far too long to answer this question, but still have
yet to find a definitive answer. Here is the question: What would be the best
flooring for a garage/workshop that also doubles as an indoor sport court?

Background:
Hope to build a 3 bay garage, about 32 x 42, with one bay being the workshop area,
including rolling table saw. The walls will be tall, and the
ceiling vaulted (scissor trusses or a metal web truss building). Two bays for
cars, both of which will bring in serious amounts of ice/water/salt/sand and
grime during the winter. We want to be able to pull the cars out, sweep and
squeegee/mop the floor, and play basketball or simply use as a large play
area.

The floor needs to have some friction for sport play, must hold up to cars,
be easily cleanable, and hold up in the workshop. Leaving it as concrete or
laying down epoxy is an option, but it would be nice to have some cushioning
for sport play. We are not talking about a rubber floor, but cushioning that
might be similar to a quality sheet vinyl. Cushioning is the key element here
that might not work for the workshop. The workshop and garage area may
see the use of car jacks and so forth. But it may just be easier in those cases
to lay down a sheet of plywood.

Thoughts, including from the commercial folks listening in?

Jeff.

What part of upstate? Ithaca is my favorite place in the world!

Anyway... Really you are looking for three different things and we are going to need to decide what is most important. If parking and basketball are the priority I would go with either TrueLock drain / sport tile or MotorMat drain/sport tile. Tiles like these are used in basketball and tennis courts across the country.

Cushion provides another issue. You are correct in stating that you do not want rubber. But any extra cushion does create a bit of an unnatural bounce. If that is not an issue, the Norsk (an import unfortunately) is probably the best tile for your needs. I would order a full box to start with and test it out. Make sure you are happy with the quality.

If you PM me I can send you two free samples of each of the other two -- but I do not have that ability with Norsk.

Why not the mats instead of tiles? The mats seem like they will collect
less road grime, be easier to clean, and have more cushioning. Thoughts here?

BTW, live outside of Ithaca, work in Ithaca.

You can do roll out flooring. Definitely not what you would see at hotels, etc for sports flooring. You are going to lose traction and some bounce. I can send samples of that as well.

Re Ithaca... I grew up taking family vacations to Robert Treeman State Park... We stayed in cabins and to this day I keep telling my wife I need to take here there.

Cover your concrete with something and roll out rubber floor when needed. Your building a garage like the size I have. I added a carport on one side and did a room on top of the center bay. 12' walls.

The temporary roll out may be a solution. When the time comes we'll be looking for
samples, but first we gotta get the building built!

Justin, been to Treman many times. Never overnight, just walking the trails.
