Well you didn't ask why, though I should have taken that as a given.
Ratchets give better knuckle clearance, and are generally more comfortable than wrenches. I primarily work on cars. If I primarily did plumbing it would be a different answer.

I would:
Look at the the job.
Look at my toolbox.
Reach for whatever tools I want to start with.

I never did keep score as to sockets vs wrenches...why bother???

If I had a choice I'd go socket and ratchet every time. But then I love ratchets. One of the coolest tools ever invented.

Not to say that wrenches are bad... they have their places. And when I absolutely need to use them, I do.

My wrenches always get grabbed first. If for no other reason than to break things loose and see what i'm up against. I generally start with a long combination and take it from there. I usually wind up with a cart full of stuff.
Sometimes i think less is better :shocking::shocking::shocking::shocking::shocking::shocking:

^^^^This. If the job calls for sockets then sockets. If wrenches, then wrenches. It ain't rocket science.

Oh and sometimes things call for a BFH right from the start.

Depends on the task at hand but in cases were either will work, I'll almost always reach for the ratchet/socket first. I generally only use wrenches when a ratchet/socket is not an option.

Sockets and a 1/4 impact are my weapons of choice. I do bodywork and you would be surprised how much my 3/8 and larger sockets sit. I'm all about trying to get done faster so I can move to the next one.

I typically prefer a ratchet and socket over a wrench as well. But as previously stated, it all really depends on the job, sometimes you don't have a choice but to use one or the other!

I usually grab a ratchet first followed by wrenches, depending on the project. If I remember the way something comes apart that will better make the decision.
This question reminds me of a wrench though, open ended...

Sockets get used more. They are faster, especially when paired with a air/cordless ratchet or impact.

Wrenches have their place. But I only use them when necessary.

Chill, Bill...

it's a valid question.

Sockets provide better contact with the fastener and are preferred unless availably or space are an issue.

It really was barely a question, until he later asked why.
