Take the misses to a Broadway show, and a carrage ride through Central Park with a stop to have brunch at the Tavern on the Green in Central Park. I took my wife on that weekend dream date 20 years ago and it is still memorable. I assume you can still get two for the price of 1 Broadway tickets if you are willing to buy your tickets the day of the show. We saw Jerry Lewis in "Damn Yankees" on our date. Last time I was there in 2013 I walked past the dakota to see where John Lennon was murdered. A British TV personality with a beard was filming a clip on the shooting of john Lennon as I walked by. Don't know who the guy filming was, but I would love to see the clip. The dakota is a beautiful/Erie building.

You may have better luck finding a truck stop near port canaveral since interstate 95 passes right through there. [update]. I just looked on Google earth and there is a pilot truck stop on i95 just outside of port canaveral.

Don garlits drag racing museum is on the west coast of Florida and would be too far to go if the boat was only in port for the day.

Definitely take a tour of the space center!!!

Enjoy your trip on this side of the pond.

I just did my first trip to Paris last year and heard about the pickpockets there so I bought some secret pockets for my passport, wallet, credit cards, money, etc. I carried a day wallet in my regular pants pocket with €50 which is enough money to get by for the day . I figured if someone stole my day wallet I wouldn't be wiped out. The pickpockets in NYC aren't near as bad as Paris, but loosing your passport, license, and money while in another country can be a major hassle (especially when you have a cruise ship to catch). I still have the secret pockets sewn in my pants and they are so comfortable tha I don't even know they are there. I put my check book in it a few weeks ago and it was so comfortable that I forgot it was there. Here is a link to the secret pockets on Amazon, and a video on how to install them by thier inventor (who has traveled the globe continuously for the last 16 years)

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FSOVM0U/?tag=atomicindus08-20
Here is the video (I just used my wife's sewing machine to put them in).

Chris

My Misses would rather look at anything with an engine than do a show shes a keeper but thanks for the tip so looking forward to stepping on US soil the closer it gets i maybe fifty but a big kid at heart.

M1tch,

Do a google search for I-80 truck stop in Iowa,it is one of the largest truck stops in the world and there should be numerous photos and videos about it.
There should be numerous trucks around JFK and also around the ship docks in NYC and New Jersey.
Have a great time while in the states, but be very cautious in the large cities. There are many who prey upon tourists.

Mike

Thanks for the advice, im not a typical tourist, with work over the years ive been to a lot of countrys and some lets say not nice places also hauled heavy abnormal loads into the middle east so learnt to keep one eye open

Shake Shack is not truly a NY thing. More West Coast. It IS still good ! Five Guys Burgers and Fries is also good. Their regular burger is a double patty.

In NYC, you really need to spend some time at the 9/11 memorial. Ellis Island is also worth the trip. As stated, dress warm, anything near the water (Manhattan IS an island) will be cold even in mid-march.

One of the Space Shuttles is parked out at the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum.

Leave your passports in the the safe in your room. Only carry the cash and credit cards you are likely going to use. When walking, you wife should have a handbag with a strap that she can put over her head. If you carry a wallet, put a thick rubber band around it (almost impossible to pick pocket this way). It might be worth while to buy a cheap one use cell phone (<$50).

Everything "in the city" is VERY expensive !

Again thanks guys, my misses just said this is the best forum shes seen, its better than trip advisor, people on there are a tad patronising somtimes, will defo go to the 9/11 memorial to pay our respects  but fantastic advice will try and get to 375 Hudson st, loading dock on King st, if i can, you will recognise me as the brit in shorts T shirt and flipflops  tis a shame about city prices as i would love to take some stuff back (a radio flyer big red would be good but cant have that as a carry on) or some garage enamel signs also :rocker:

I've actually been to the Don Garlits Museum. It's in N Central Florida - specifically just outside of Ocala. You'd have to rent a car to drive there and would need an entire day to allow enough drive time and time to tour the museum. If you were to get there there is a Pilot a few miles up I-75 where you could get your long haul truck fix. Anything in NYC is going to be expensive but were it me I'd go for the pizza there and save the burger stop for Florida. Or if you are more of the adventerous sort find a local restaurant in FL that serves gator.

I understand the lure of NYC, But the rest of NY has as much if not more to offer. Upstate NY, the REAL NY, is beautiful, If you can swing it, grab a quick flight to go see Niagara Falls. Only about a 1 hour flight from NYC to Buffalo. Probably $100/person round trip. The city is cool for a visit, but gets old for a country boy like me.

Katz deli on Houston street :bounce::bounce:

BTW

My car has never been broken into here in the Bronx,

In NJ the trunk was popped open at the Garden State Plaza and in Connecticut the original radio was stolen

Mitch, there is so much to see and do here in NYC you would need a month to do it all and let's not forget that there is a whole complete state of NY

I spent this week in Manhattan. I'm not a local but a had a good burger at "the counter". Which is 1/2 a block south of the New Years ball. That's between 41 st and 42 nd and Broadway.

The place only does burgers of any kind. I got a small 1/3lb burger but they will do much bigger. Here is a photo of mine. It was very good.

I also had a good meal at juniors which is 1/2 block west of Times Square.

They are known for third cheesecake but the matzo ball soup and hot pastrami Ruben were also good.

If you are feeling adventurous take a ride on the subway. I took the 1 train (Broadway line). Up to Columbia university. And had lunch at Tom's dinner just because I was walking by. Toms dinner is better known as Monk's diner from sinefeld TV show. The burger was good but not great.

I know some are afraid of the subway, but their are tons of people ion it, ncluding kids who ride it to and from school. Seeing kids riding the subway to school by themselves seemed odd to me, but I looked it up and it is just a way of life in NYC. I was curious about the minimum age for a kid to to ride alone to school and couldn't find one. What I did find was that students get a 50%discount and during school bus strikes the city offers free subway passes to parents of first and second graders to take the kids to school. There are several articles written that this implies that the city believes that third graders are old enough to ride alone.

I grew up in NY and now that I live 3000 miles away I preach to all my friends here that they MUST visit NYC at least once in their life. Greatest city in the world .... to visit. My burger recommendation would be to go to any of the long-established steak restaurants around the theater district. You won't soon forget an aged sirloin burger. With limited time, Empire State Building and September 11th Memorial would be on my short list. You might want to go online to see if you can pre-purchase tickets for the ESB. Hope you have a great trip. Take lots of pictures.

I too live in NYC, disagree a bit. In the subway system pick pockets have tried for my wallet/watch at least 15 times. Nothing like grabbing a pick pockets hand as he goes for something. Keep the wallet in front pocket, women have a decent grip on your hand bag. That said, it is pretty safe in NYC, absolutely nothing like the 70s.

I live in the boonies in NY. Country folk will always tell you how safe and pleasant country life, and that is true to an extent. In a very real way people in NYC are friendlier than the people around me that will tell you how friendly they are.

Mitch, hope you are having an awesome time! Have you done anything besides eat? :)

I went there in September. It is a nice place if you are a car guy. I was really surprised. Didn't get to meet meet Big Daddy, that would have made it even better.

Glad your trip went well! I'm late to the party but serindipity, yeah the one in the movie, has a great burger. I was beat and looking for a big fat burger when we wandered in. I got a burger with caviar on it for a fair price and was super pleased with it. I'm snobby about my food and would recommend any body try it if you get a chance.

Looking forward to the pics :)

The Grand Canyon!

A bit far from "Lost Wages", but Hoover Dam is worth a visit.

You have to see the Bellagio Fountain during the day and at night.

The outdoor free show at Treasure Island is good, but you need to get a viewing spot early.

Circ de Sole is a MUST SEE !. Multiple shows in Vegas. I saw Mystère and loved it.

Some of the older casinos (Flamingo) have a few penny and nickel slots near the front door. Some of these machines are "loose". The wife and I played for over an hour and had 2 cups full of nickles ($20-$40) starting with the change in our pockets. Yes, they spit out nickles ! I love the sound of coins hitting the pan !! :D

IMHO, some of the "all you can eat" buffets are not really worth the money.
