comments on used tool prices

Guys on here often comment accurately about pawn shops wanting new prices plus for used tools. Some flea market vendors try the same route. My observation is that those who try this route keep their over priced tools or change their pricing eventually. They also highly value Snap On tools. My attitude about that is , ok, SO has good tools that deserve a premium, but, come on , a used tool is a used tool and while the brand of tool may add value, the condition affects price. A used tool showing wear is automatically worth 1/2 price or less. Much over half new price IMO makes it more reasonable to buy a new item.

Another practice pawn shops use is to put their boxes of used tools that are coming out of pawn and refuse to break the set up. I understand their reasoning because a box of tools will get picked over, leaving nothing but junk in the box. I have picked up small boxes cheaply that have had most of the good stuff taken out. Sometimes I offer to sort out the few good tools and put them on the resale pile for him and dispose of the junk. Usually they will go for that since it clears out floor space for them. BTW, any pawn shop will tell you that they prefer the customer to redeem the pawn rather than make the shop have to go to the trouble to sell it. BTW, pawn shops usually have someone that sells at flea markets who they set aside the good tools for as they come out of pawn .

One Area pawn shop is good admission free entertainment.. You can purchase a used HF 3/4" drive socket set for only three times the price of a new one. Anything SnapOn is behind a glass case, along with the other USA tools. Craftsman sockets are priced at twice the price of new. I don't tink we suppose to know nuttin. Theys wil tells us wats its wordth. :willy_nil Before leaving; Make sure to complement them on all their neat stuff.:p:p

I agree with you. Decent used tools I max out at 1/2 price. Yard sales even less, unless it's a gem I've been wanting. I don't bother with pawn shops anymore. I look for consignment shops that do storage clean outs. I find a lot of good tool deals that way.

I usually find good deals on snap on tools at one pawn shop that is close to all of garages. And that one will drop the price 35% of asking price just for you asking. Another one that is always loaded with snap on prices all their tools at 50% of retail and will drop 15% off that price with a little haggling. I.have to really want something to buy from the second one, those are the only two that I frequent.

This is why I usually trade tools into the SO guy if there's something I don't need. He'll give me full price in credit and takes anything SO. I've traded in other name brand tools and he'll give me well over 50% even for broken ones.

A tool with a lifetime warranty never wears out.

Pawn shops in my area charge close to the full retail price and then when you make an offer they boot you out the shop; so I tend to stay away from them.

Sometimes I wish someone would give me the low down on how it works, in other words I understand they make their money on the interest they are charging for the loan; but if a person comes into their shop too sell their tools outright how much do they get for say a snap on $100.00 used ratchet???

Maybe it costs $100.00 dollars new and if used the customer could ask $50.00 dollars is that what the pawn shop is paying to buy it from the customer??? Or does the pawn shop give the guy $25.00 dollars???

I never got smart as too why they kick people out for asking for a price break, makes me sick for thinking of all the **** they dish out.

I've seen some of the same ridiculous mark ups but sometimes they miss certain brands. Cornwell comes to mind. I used to always see a like new 2150 3/8 impact for $75 then 50 in a bucket on the floor while they had a beat up IR under glass for twice as much.

The pawn shops around here think that snap on tools are gold plated.

They also think that reselling HF goods at 3 times the price is good business. God a ****** tool box, rusted tools and interior, bent and welded tools... $50 final. It's laughable.

I have found a few Diamond and other old tools in good condition that the pawn shops knew jack **** about and sold for pennies. The rusty and worn out CM socket sets are priced 5 times more than new (half the time Chinese as well).

Maybe they will pay 25.00 the one's around here used eBay to gauge the price that they will pay, and the best I can tell is they pay a 1/4 of what it sells for on eBay, I know I picked up a full set of snap-on snap ring pliers in the blow mold case. For 49.00 out the door, I think they list for 369.00 on snap-on website, so they may have paid 20.00 for them.

You can get some good deals at Pawn shop's but you have to work on it, I go every week and shoot the bull with the girls that work there. Believe me it helps on getting a discount

You can always spot the over priced tools @ the swap meets, they are the ones with dog eared(worn out and tattered) price tags attached to them

Pawn shops are hit or miss around me. My favorite one is about an hr drive, which *****. They always get the coolest stuff, and will do package deals if you buy a few items.

There is one very close to my house that is your typical pawn shop. All tools are junk and overpriced. However, they do have a decent selection of firearms and their prices are fair for those.

There is a 3rd by me that specializes in tools. Any tool you could want, they probably have it. But, a lot of it is cheap junk or beat to death. They get a lot of truck brand tools, but the prices aren't quite a ripoff but definitely not a deal. That being said I did buy a Cornwell 1/4 ratchet that was seized up for $5 there, it needed a cleaning but works.

The only place I have found great deals on used tools if from certain tool truck guys. Some really wheel and deal on used. My ratchet collection exploded on all the 36 tooth SO ratchets I bought for $20 and less. Swap meets and flea markets, 99% of tool vendors are flat out nuts. I have seen guys ask for double the price of new vise grips for the old USA ones because you can't buy these anymore. I'm sorry new vise grips aren't that bad to pay $30 for an old one.

Went to a pawn shop this weekend since I hadn't been to one in years. All they had I was interested in was a Jackson W40 welding helmet like the one I bought new for around $120. This one was a little rough but I already have new lenses for it. They only wanted $180 :shocking:

i make my rounds of the pawn shops on a monthly basis.

i've found truck & industrial brand tools in the $1 bins, dirty, greasy MTS socket and wrench holders for a dollar or so.
i picked up a slightly used wet tile saw for 50% of what home depot was asking for the exact same saw.
i picked up an 80's vintage SO vacuum/fuel pressure tester in it's original metal box, for $15, and an 80's SO vacuum hand pump, with all the accessories, and the original warranty card still in the box for $30.

the rest of the stuff they have is kinda hit and miss, some items priced reasonably, others way overpriced.

most of what they have is either brand new, or horribly beaten.

BTW, pawn shops usually have someone that sells at flea markets who they set aside the good tools for as they come out of pawn .

I personally know of two instances of this.
In both cases, they travel an hour away to sell at flea markets.
Their prices are usually very reasonable and they move their products.

In my experience with flea markets, if you are friendly and take time to talk with vendors, they will try to work with you. Especially if you are a repeat customer.

Around here, pawn shops vary. IMO, the more rural the area, the better the pricing and deals on less known quality brands.

In talking with one flea market vendor I got the impression that one of his sources of tools was from going to these little small town auctions. I never have tried that, even though one is 9 miles from me. One pawn shop guy told me he had some success making up sets of tools and putting them in some of his nicer tool boxes and selling them at an auction. By nicer boxes I mean small hand boxes. I have got some Craftsman crown boxes from various pawn shops at very reasonable prices, like $2 to $5, but other than that the only boxes I have had any interest in was a plastic box or two that would not leak in moderate rain for outside use, like garden tools. I don't need any more of them though.

I see this all the time on here, except in my local pawn shops. I've gotten such smokin deals from my pawn shops I had to buy them. I'm talking a complete Mac wrench set, Snap On screwdrivers, Snap On flare nut wrenches, impact sockets, Ridgid and Dewalt power tools/batteries, and many more individual pieces. Then the flea market I go to is even better. There's a guy who comes in a white van every week loaded down with all USA made tools. I bought nos 27, 28, and 30mm Husky USA and SK wrenches for $5 each, a huge set of at least 15 Husky USA, Matco, SK impact/chrome swivel sockets for like $25 I think, Proto, Craftsman USA, Blackhawk, some Snap On, etc. for really, very reasonable prices. Then at the same time there is this one guy with lightly used Snap On stuff that is insanely high priced. I usually swing by his table last to ask some prices, and show him everything I bought for $30 compared to his $250 10 piece socket set. I always throw in a "still haven't sold that ratchet yet huh? I'll do $25 right now." He fires back with "Can't do it man, its worth $140 brand new." Okie dokie then... Seeeee yaaa next week....

Hit pawnshops whenever I can...some are always good, some always ****, and some are hit or miss.
This may sound racist or sexist...and I certainly don't mean it to; I've developed this theory over many years, and damned if it don't hold true. If you have a choice between counter people, deal with a minority (IDK how else to say it) or a woman. Grumpy old white guys won't deal for ****!

I remember right before the two Sears in my city started the last replacements of the USA stock with the Chinese stock I picked up a 1/2" set of SAE sockets made in the US for $10 (from 3/8" to 1 1/4"). As soon as that NOS supply dried up the vendors nearly doubled their prices on anything Craftsman. Thankfully no one has the patience to sift through tubs of sockets to find the good ones like I tend to do, I've almost completed the metric 1/2" Cman set.

However, the pawnshops here are crooked as hell when it comes to tools. When I was searching for a used bandsaw one shop had an old Ryobi one that was beat to hell and they wanted $90 for it.

I've only dealt with one pawnbroker on tools here, and the prices couldn't be beat. Maybe they just wanted to get rid of the stuff... who knows?

You guys shopping for used tools:

GJ member ssdave made a comment a couple months back and I have found it to be more than true:
Used tool sales on Ebay in mid-summer absolutely **** for sellers.
Nobody is buying right now.
I am seeing items time out, or selling for the asking price with one single bid.

An Indestro 2797 3/8" drive u-joint sold earlier this afternoon for $4 bucks (plus about $3 shipping)
As I recall, I paid about $9 or $11 for the same unit 6 months ago.

Not a clue on Snap-on or other truck brands, because I don't pay any attention to those.
The other vintage US-made stuff right now is way cheap. Worth a look.

I know what you mean, yesterday afternoon, I were browsing Gumtree and local to myself a guy was sell a brand new never used snap on 1/4" drive ratchet T72 model for £40.00, Snap-on sells these for £66.80 inc vat in the uk, I brought it off of him, because he was a genuine guy who had kids and looked like he were desperate for the cash, so I saved £26.80, if the guy sold for £50.00 I would still have brought it, still got a good deal and sometimes stuff like that doesn't sell for much on Ebay and Gumtree. I see plenty of used 3/8" and 1/4" drive ratchets Snap on and Mac going for £20.00-25.00 and keep getting relisted, but then you have the clowns who try to sell these used for more than the new retail price, now that's another story!
