I'm close to purchasing lighting for my garage project (28 x 27'-6", 5/12 ceiling, 9'-5" at sides and 15'-3" at the peak).

I have access to a number of new, surplus, and very inexpensive 2-tube 48" fluorescent fixtures.

A friend has purchased the Hyperikon T8 LED tubes below to replace his conventional T12 tubes, and is happy with the results. The Amazon reviews are overwhelmingly positive.

I'm tempted to do the same, but welcome any warnings, negative experiences, or alternatives worthy of consideration.

Thanks in advance!

I've had a number of different brands of LED tubes in the shop for about 3 years. The only ones that havent failed have been Hyperikon.

I run the 5k temp and like them alot so far.

The timeframe is still a bit short to know how long they will last, the other brands started full bulb flickering that was really terrible. These Hyperikons havent had that problem yet.

All the other brands were super cheap led tubes.

What lamps were in the fixtures that you have access to?
If the answer is T12, then those lamps will be OK.
If the answer is T8, then you will most likely have to change all the sockets. Alternatively, you can look for the same lamp in a "double-end" power instead of "single-end". Then, you wont have to change the sockets.
Good luck,
CD

Thanks for the replies. Tem, that is a very encouraging report. Cybr, the fixtures are indeed T12s.

Point of interest and zero import... This brings my post count up to nine, for an average of one every 18 months. WooHoo!

I have bought about 20+ Hyperikon tubes so far to upgrade T-12 8'. In fact I like them enough that I bought some new 8' fixtures, and pulled the ballasts for the Hyperikon tubes (also because they match the rest of the fixtures).

Cheaper to just get new LED shop lights than it is to buy retro fit tubes. I liked the idea of the retro fit tubes for my existing shop lights in my basement and house garage. But the retro fit tubes I tested cost $14 each.
I found these on Amazon, but have not bought any yet since I am just starting to wire my new garage.

I was also at a Lowes today and went to look at their shop light selection. They had nothing at all but a sign saying new stuff is on the way soon. So I might just wait (Christmas is already costing me $$$ anyway) and see what Lowes is doing.

The only problem with buying super cheap LED fixtures or bulbs is they rarely last more than a year or 2 in my experience. I've had alot of LED bulbs through amazon review programs. Sometimes you get lucky, often times they just prematurely fritz out.

Unfortunately its hard to tell the difference between quality bulbs at a price point and trash bulbs stickered high in order to seem quality.

Its "You get what you pay for .... sometimes...maybe."

Its any LED bulb or fixture that can fizzle out. They are pretty much all made the same way. I have had expensive LED bulbs already go bad in one to two years. Have some still going strong. To many variables to determine why some last and others fail quickly.

That is about the best you will do up here, I'm surprised to see that they have dropped to a reasonable price, some of the suggestions given are not available this side of the border.. Many here seem to vouch for the longevity of them, go ahead and give them a try. Keep in mind they are ballast bypass, you will need to toss the old ballasts(or just disconnect them) and rewire the sockets at one end of the fixture.
