What are common axle nuts sizes? I have a 36mm that i used on a VW once.

Supposely toyota uses 30mm. Any other common sizes? I bought the 36mm and used it that day and thats all. I dont want to buy extra large sockets and not use them.

does HF have a axle nut set or something?

I haven't worked on a lot of cars, but I do know of a few. Honda uses 32 mm axle and spindle nuts. Small Chevys and Toyotas use 30 mm. I worked on a Mitsubishi Eclipse and it was a 32 mm. A couple of VWs I worked on were all 30 mm. C5 and C6 Corvettes use a 34 mm.

I have this set from HF.

The last two that I have done, on a Honda and Nissan have been 32mm. Both cars nuts were very clean and did not have any corrosion on them, but I struggled with only 1/2 drive tools. I eventually removed the nut on the Honda, but on the Nissan, I ended up twisting the male end off of an SK 1/2 drive extension, followed by shattering the female end of a Craftsman 1/2 drive extension.

Eventually I broke down and had to go to the local farm store and buy a cheep Chinese made 3/4 drive breaker bar and socket :( Dont get too worried, they have since been replaced with a Proto 3/4 drive set :) Hopefully I don't have trouble removing stubborn nuts anymore.

Nissan commonly uses 36mm. A lot of GMs use 34, IIRC. I'd say 30/32/34/36 would cover you for pretty much all you run into.

While we're discussing big sockets, ever foresee the possibility of a Land Rover coming into the shop? If so, get a 27mm for the lugnuts on those.

Well, I have never measured my nuts in inches, let alone millimeters. They are both about the same size, though. If you need me to, I can get you the measurements on both my nuts and my "axle" later on this evening. I don't know why you are so interested, but to each his own.:lol_hitti

those cheap sets are really though...but you need a 12pt. set!!! No 6pt...

Specially VW has 12 point nuts.

1993ish and up went to 12point IIRC. that may have just been the bigger axles/motors aswell. not 100% sure. but i know pre-93 are 30mm 6 point and post are 12. but i dont see a ton of 90mm axles (4cyl)

and later onto other sizes/points

2 9/16", 1 9/16", 1 7/16", those funky prong sockets Dana and Corporate axles have on the older Dodge, Ford and Chevs.

little rover w/e they are call MAYBE. but not the big one...

my c-man impact goes 27mm. i think its 21,24, 27mm and then i have a 36mm snappy, i forgot what i used it on one day. it was a VW or audi. he happen to be there and i said what the hell give me the impact socket that fits this. I do think i've picked up a 12pt 30mm as well. but its not an impact...

RAYJAY... link to that please.

i found this thing...

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000OUW7GQ/?tag=atomicindus08-20

But really i might buy one as needed, just gotta find a place now since i'm only wrenching on stuff at home.

I dont like doing axles as the ones with the carrier bearing always gives me trouble. i've NEVER had one come out remotely close to nicely.

At least, no one can accuse you of being sexist!

32mm rear accord, 36mm front accord. Broke way too many tools trying to get the front off, proto 3inch 1/2 extension, 1/2 t bar and a hf 25" breaker. Ended getting it off with a impact gun I borrowed from a friend ( I really need to get one of my own). The proto broke way before the breaker bar. (took the breaker bar back got a new one no questions, even though I had a 4 foot cheater bar on it when it broke:wtf:)

I don't even want to know why you are using sockets on a vag. I prefer to use the old twig and berries myself. :)

I recently bought a 6pcs hub nut socket box consisting of three 12pt sockets (30, 32, 26 mm) and three Allen (inner hex) sockets, namely the sizes you mention; 14, 17 and 19 mm.

Do you (or someone else) know what particular VW models that uses Allen for hub nuts? I've never seen any!
