Common Lug Nut Sizes

I'm planning to get a set of Thinwall Flip Sockets.
I know 19mm & 21mm are the most common. Not to mention 3/4 = 19mm.
Any other sizes out there?

Give me a year a model and a country of operation for that because i have never seen an 18mm lug. The only time I've ever used an 18mm for a lug nut is when a chrome cap falls off a Chrysler lug and 19mm is loose 18 fits just right.

That's funny, I just did the same thing on a chrysler concord yesterday!

Seems to be a common thing with the lugnuts on Chrysler vehicles. With every Jeep Wrangler or Dodge Ram I ever owned in the last 20 years I got into the habit of just replacing those factory lug nuts during the first tire rotation to avoid problems. But I buy Ford pick-ups now.

So you prefer replacing ball joints vs lug nuts.

My 2001 Saab 9-3 had 18mm lugs. Maybe they were aftermarket lugnuts?

I haven't seen much 17mm or Euros come by.
I'm just on a tight budget at the moment. Firestone doesn't pay me much.
Not to mention I'm just starting out.

Firestone doesn't pay anyone much do yourself a favor and find a better place to work.

since you mentioned you were on a tight budget and starting out at Firestone. nothing wrong with that.

little off topic, since you asked for a flip socket set...
unless you'll be mobile on the road with limited tool storage space, flip sockets are real hassle to use, you'll need to use the extension (unless you have an extended anvil impact wrench) and that two-piece setup will only cause you to lose time. it gets worse when you encounter rusty nuts stuck in the socket, or mis-matched size nuts.

i have the harborfreight 7pc lug nut set. just take the colored plastic sleeves off, and you'll have thin wall set. they even have plastic piece inside the socket so that the capped style long chrome nuts won't get scratched or dinged.
i've been using the 17-19-21 extensively. even used the 13/16 for my hub puller, which almost destroyed the puller since i was rapping it with the 1000 ftlbs gun. i had gloves on and pretty sure the socket would implode or split, but held up just fine...

i have the matco thinwall flip socket set also, it's in my 'road box' definitely useful when you have limited storage space. the harborfreight sockets are as thin as the matco sockets. but of course you need to take the colored plastic sleeves off...

I just checked on the Net.

1992 Pontiac Sunbirds used 18mm lug nuts. So did early Chevy S-10 (NO MY GIVEN).

HOWEVER, it's not the lug nut that counts, it's the thread size on the bolt, right? I have seen the same thread size on different sizes of lug nuts

My car has 13/16". At least the manual says they're 1/2" lug nuts, so I assume the actual socket size is 13/16" and not 21mm. Either way, I find it odd that an '06 would have SAE lugs...

19 (3/4), 21, 22 (7/8), 17 (euro), 14 (kia), 15/16 and you need an 18 for when chrysler caps rust off. That should cover 99%.

Ran across a late model car a couple months back that had 13/16" lugs. Was a saturn IIRC.

I'm not gonna lie about it...they are cheap to their employees & shop equipments. But what can I say, I just need to get my foot through the automotive industry then I'm off.

Minutes ago, a friend of my son borrowed an 18mm socket from me just for this case !

Like others, I never heard of this !

Common sizes are

17mm for Saab and most Euro (exemption will be x3 and x5 they use 19mm)
19mm most cars and trucks
21mm most cars and trucks
22mm jaguar Honda with 14mm studs
13/16 a lot of tuner lugs use sae
3/4 a lot of tuner lugs use sae for custom wheels
7/8 gm truck/suv
1 inch older full size trucks ford/Chrysler come to mind
1 1/16 for older land rover vehicles heavy duty trucks

18mm for dodges, jeeps and chrysler when the chrome caps finally fall off. Without it you will round the lug nut off. Also being a tech in the NE district get yourself 17, 18, 19, 21, 22, 24. I have yet to really need anything else for lug nuts unless it's a big truck Mitsubishi fuzo's **** but my shop took care of those sockets and a 3/4" drive impact.

So, a complete set is 14mm, 15mm, 17mm, 18mm, 19mm, 21mm, 22mm, 23mm, 27mm, 5/8", 13/16", 3/4", 7/8", 1", 1 1/16".

Does anyone make a complete set?
