Do we have a thread comparing the various garage storage cabinets? If we do can somebody point me towards it because my search-fu isn't working.

The practical side of me wants to build something either from scratch or using the HF toolboxes. The OCD side of me wants Lista, Vidmar, Moduline, etc...

Vendors:
Lista
Vidmar
Moduline
Baldhead
Gladiator

any others?

I don't believe you will find a thread covering all the brands you listed or more, due to the fact that some are simply better and more expensive than others.

HF - cabinets have gotten a good review in that they are inexpensive, lots of storage for the basic design and have nice features like roller bearings. Some have done a great job installing them on this site.

Modeline - are nice in the fact they are aluminum. For a trailer set up they would be the top choice for light weight / corrosion resistant cabinets. The cost is high though. If I remember the storage capacity in weight and size is similar to the basic tool cabinet.

Gladiator - if you purchase the prefabed version are good choice for inexpensive storage cabinets. I say storage cabinets since they don't really sell a tool cabinet but rather locker style and basic kitchen style cabinets. Some have done a great job installing them on this site.

Lista / vidmar - One company now and basically the same cabinets are the more expensive of the choices you had and have the most drawer storage weight handling and room available. They also have the most options of sizes than any other cabinet maker I have found. This is where the choices you had are so different. I chose lista for durability and storage size / weight handling. Got tired of dealing with 16" a 18" drawer depths since a lot of my tools are the same style and I had to spread them out among other drawers on my old box.

I have several "Seville Classics Ultra HD" cabinets from Sam's Club. For the money, you really can't go wrong. They are around $70 for a 24"x28" ready-to-assemble cabinet. The finish is pretty good, assembly is simple, and they seem plenty strong.

I would have preferred to get the 30" welded Gladiators shown above, but I couldn't justify the normal price, and didn't have time to wait for a Black Friday type deal on them.

Check out the NewAge / Coleman cabinets on my site ShopStorageCabinets.com
Lots less money than Lista or Modeline. The Professional and Bold lines are fully welded cabinets with full length piano hinges, ball bearing drawer slides and interior features like roll out shelves and metal pegboard.
Worth a look? Let me know.

I am just surprised we don't have a thread really comparing the various options. Most of the less expensive options I am finding are only 16" or 18" deep. For that depth I am better off expanding my HF tool box workbench. Downside to that they don't have anything that matches to be used as an upper cabinet.

definately cheaper than the insane expensive ones, but still pretty expensive once you get a good run of cabinets going

Learned that you can Search threads on GJ a lot easier by just using GOOGLE. Lists how many posts on each thread so you can easily tell which ones were the big ones.

For instance, you want to look for Stronghold, Google this:
. . . . . Stronghold cabinet site:garagejournal.com

Or Lista cabinet you might Google this:
. . . . . Lista site:garagejournal.com

Or Vidmar you might Google this:
. . . . . Vidmar site:garagejournal.com

I have Baldhead and love them. They are not cheap but they will be around in 30-40 years and I won't. They are the last cabinets I'll ever need to buy. I bought them for there durability and because they carry more weight per drawer than most. The 8" drawers easily handle 200-300 pounds. Bald is beautiful!

You can check auction web sites. Schools are always remodeling. I got three different sets from three different school districs & they were all the same color.
Try:
Rene Bates Auctions
Public Surplus Auction
There are many auction sights. One maybe close to your location.

Other, nontraditional options are office cabinets. I have an IKEA tall wardrobe cabinet, and two wall cabinets, plus office horizontal cabinets. Total invested is $300 for all.

I have 2 uppers from Gladiator I got from Lowe's a few years back when they went on clearance and I'm happy with them. I know they're not premier but they fit the bill. I have also built my own stuff out of wood to include a large soffit type storage and a few cabinets. Still not finished with doors btw but they're up.

It all depends on what you want and what you're willing to spend on it. If you build your own you can make it how you want it but costs time in planning and building. If you buy its more money but its done once you set it up.

Now if money were not an issue is be all over some Lista boxes a guy is selling locally.

I have Ultimate cabinets in my shop. So far so good and they were reasonable compared to a lot of other names out there.
I can't find the pictures but there are a couple on my build thread.
