For what they are asking for some of those I would just buy a brand new master set that no one else has had there grubby little meat beaters on.

IE: http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item...roup_id=2293&supersede=&store=canada&tool=all

OR

http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item...roup_id=2292&supersede=&store=canada&tool=all

I gotta agree with that!

The price is what they think the stuff is worth, but come on! 15 or 20K for a 25 year old tool set:confused:

The master set from snap-on is a better deal and you have more tools and less money in it than what some of these people are asking!

I suspect half or more sell as complete sets, and most go to some low ball broker after the seller gets tired of trying to sell for 80% of new cost and actually needs either the money or space right now. Brokers part of the stuff, sell the box and each set or tool by itself for a quick easy profit.

I have bought several collections in the past year, with the intent on selling most on eBay. IMO, Craigs list is the place to find the deals, not eBay. Maybe some of these dreamers out there looking to get crazy prices for their collections make buying a new master set seem like a fair comparison. But trust me, for ever 10 folks out there trying to get out from under their tool debt by selling at a crazy high price, there is one guy who has good stuff and really wants to sell right away. At a better than reasonable price. But negotiating a fair price is the key to getting a good deal. I will price out each piece in a collection individually, then add it all up, to make sure I make the right offer.

People have all sorts of reasons for selling their tools, not all involve a shortage of cash. I bought one collection of all pristine Snap-on stuff from a contractor who had two new Mercedes in his garage. His reason....there's nothing left on his cars that he can fix, and he already had another set at his shop.

But there are also lots of motivated sellers, too. The last guy I bought a large collection from was in serious trouble financially, was selling pretty much everything he owned. He was VERY happy to get cash from me, as he said it would have been only a matter of days before the sherrifs came to confiscate everything, and the cash gave him a decent price and avoided that visit from the sherrifs. As much as I felt sad for his situation, I did not twist his arm at all.

I am not saying that there is anything wrong with buying used tools, not at all. I buy lots of them. Its just of you were going to hand some one a wad of money around 20-25k for some of what you showed us, that is just nuts. I just like to see people get fair prices for both the seller and buyer.

Also hey skyline how come you charge me 23.00$ to ship a screwdriver to me! I would buy from you but the shipping is murder!

Diesel.....those were just quick sets I found for sale...like I said the one near me has been for sale for several months relisted about every 2-3 weeks on CL...I imagine a lot of the sets on eBay are a result of the "you oughta sell that on eBay!" syndrome and not really researching the true value. I don't think there are too many tool sets with pieces shaped like the Virgin Mary or a cow-shaped cheezit that are novely enough to bring ridiculous money like many eBay newbies are led to believe.

I appreciate that, but it's International Priority Mail rates, which I do not set. With the amount of stuff I sell, I do not want to go to the post office every time I need to ship a package, which I need to do if I use Parcel Post. My local post office is VERY slow and frequently crowded. With Priority, they pick up every day. I don't think there's any other way I can ship internationally through Paypal's automated service, which I use for everything sold on eBay.

back in the 80s I was doing that all the time.
back when the economy was good and the old guys were retiring, I would buy their whole toolbox tools and all for anywhere from $500 to $2500 and then keep some stuff and sell the rest off.
there were also the young guys that went to graduate quick university and in 6 months they were a trained diesel or aircraft mechanic. one school the snap on dealer would stop by the last day of school and sell them on a toolbox and set that they will NEED if they are going to get a job in the industry.
they bought it and then found out they could not make a go of it and then I bought their box and tools

the market has changed, with ebay there are more potential buyers and an easier way to get the word out. its easier to sell off the pieces for more than I would have give at the time

My answer is always, "Yeah, you've got $20k worth of tools in that box at today's retail. You've been making a living with them for ** years and some are pretty beat. You got pissed at the Snap-on truckie, so you've got a mix of S-o, Mac, Craftsman and a bunch of other stuff. Best of luck at getting $10k cash for them. If you want $2500 cash call me."

thnx, jack vines

Seller is giving you the item list. Do the pricing on Snap-on web site. If you can buy at 30%-to under 50% then I would say it`s a good deal.
