shop is really really nice BUT what makes you a stand out is a Ricky Bobby car.
would love to hear that story- is there a family story like his?
tell us!
Very cool Sell the Viper!
There isn't a real story but here is how Ricky Bobby came about.
Watching the movie (which I love!), I thought back to when I was a kid and I really wanted a Dukes of Hazard car, every kid did. I did a little research and found that the 2 cars in the movie had been purchased by a gentleman and restored one of the two. I also found that the paint scheme was based on the cars of the famous racer Smokey Yunick.
http://www.smokeyyunick.com/ Someone had really done some research and thought behind designing Reese Bobby's car in the movie.
The more I watched the movie, the more I liked the car. I found an original imperial blue chevelle SS 396 that needed a little body work and a paint job about 2 hours away. I drove there and purchased the car. I brought it home and 2 friends and my wife wouldn't let me paint the car as Ricky Bobby. Soooo I started looking for another chevelle. I found one on Ebay and threw out of low number. I bought the car and brought it to a local professional builder.
http://clayphillipsracecars.com/index.html By the way, the builder thought I was CRAZY to build Ricky Bobby.
I knew the car was rough but I thought we could paint it and be done. It had a low budget 350 and new tires. Weeeeelll, once we sand blasted and found all of the bondo and nastiness that had been covered up, it was time to regroup. All new front fenders, hood, floor, rear quarters and a ton of metal work. Clay Phillips builds the best performance cars so he kind of call my man card so we started to makes some upgrades. I ordered a 502 BB pumping out over 500 hp. Of course then we needed a new trans, new rear end, and suspension. That is where the TCI streetfighter, moser rear end and hotchkis suspension, QA1 adjustable coil overs and Aerospace billet 4 wheel disc brakes came in. New interior and all new chrome was put on the car. A complete and total restoration. IF I ever want to have a absolutely perfect 69 chevelle, all we have to do is color sand it and paint it a different color and put on different wheels/tires. It might be worth more as it sits right now.
here is what we started with
