I am looking to replace my garage doors. I like the composite overlay style (clopay coachman series) doors more than the beadboard stamped steel ones. Can anyone comment on the maintenance required for these overlays...do they need to be painted or coated every few years? Are they generally durable or do they start to look bad after a few years?

I've got a pair. Gotta be over 15 years now. Other than an occasional squirt with a hose, I've done nothing to them since installation. They face dead West, into the incoming storms and setting sun. Judge for yourself.

I have them on my garage and they are still just the factory white. They are getting close to 2 years old, been through 2 winters now, and still look brand new. That isn't a long term review by any means but they look 100% fine after 2 years. We plan to paint them but initially they came way later than planned and we couldn't get our painter back before winter and now time has passed and we keep forgetting about it frankly. The stock white looks fine so we aren't in a rush to do something. If one of the factory colors looks good to you I would go with that and feel comfortable it would last a long time.

There are options like the Amarr Classica out there as well that can be some of both. It has some of the look, with the low maintenance of a standard garage door. I have seen good overlay doors and bad. Some depends on how they built and with what materials, and some depends on how and where they are installed. I personally like the look, and have put them in, but wouldn't have them myself (and I had the option to build my own for nothing).
