Compound curves without an English wheel

I'm looking for other ways to create compound curves in 16-18 gauge sheet metal with hand tools. Currently I use a slip roll then move to different plastic and rubber hammers with metal on top of an anvil or shot bag. Applications are usually rear roll pans on late 30's early 40's cars. Anyone car to share their own techniques?

Wasnt anything left of the outer skin, so this is remains of the inner

I do as you mentioned above and also use a shrinker around the edges to help a little...

It's probably not applicable to what you want to do, but this was an interesting video I ran across some time ago:
