Hitachi (Metabo) makes really good tools for the money. In my opinion maybe the very best value available. However, (isn't there always one of those) a straight compound miter saw will quickly become replaced by a sliding miter when you find out how limited you are in what can be cut. If all I'm cutting is a simple molding I am more likely to use a hand miter saw than dig out a power tool. The power miter only saves a few seconds per cut. Great for a whole house job, not so much for a few cuts.

I love my Hitachi 12" slider.

I would not buy a non slider unless I had a particular use case. The sliding mechanism is so helpful.

At work, I've got a Hitachi 12", non slider. Love it, but I agree with mike and seber, get a slider if you can afford it.
I also have a Milwaukee 12" slider and at home, a 10" Ryobi non-slider.
Of the three, the Hitachi is probably my favorite, with the Milwaukee a close second.
The laser on the Hitachi is what puts it ahead of the Milwaukee.
The Ryobi is a good saw, just too small and it's cast iron, frickken heavy!

You can buy an add on laser pretty cheap. It's just a little puck you add to the arbor shaft.
