there was a post a long time back about there only being 2 manufacters of air compressors and the rest being made by these said 2..i believe it was a lawsuit of some sort that showed who made what...ive tried the search function but either i cant spell compressor manufacter or it dont work? anyone know where i can find this?

There are certainly more than two actual manufacturers of compressors. Indeed some units are private labeled versions of other brands, There are a number of legimate manufacturers of pumps and tanks and assembled units. Most of the cheap and portable units are probably relabeled or private labeled, but of the larger stationary units, there are several manufacturers.

Off the top of my head, these people make their own compressors, and are re-badged by many others:
Campbell-Hausfeld (Husky, Farmhand, etc)
Devilbliss (maybe Kobalt, definitely Sams Club)
Then you have the quality ones that make their own:
Ingersoll-rand, Quincy, etc...
