I got a huge tank from work. I am guessing it is about a 200 gallon tank. In my old garge I plumbed up an old small compressor to it just to get by. Now that I am in my new shop I would like to get some real air in it. Would it be cost effective to rig some kind of motor and compressor to the tank I have or just go and find good deal on a new set up? And if so how would you go about finding just a compressor?

Thanks for your help.

Eatoncompressor.com sells just pumps, anywhere from 4.5- 25+ hp. The only problem Id see is trying to fill that tank up... its HUGE. IF you used a 5hp compressor pump and motor on that thing it would not only take forever but the pump would get really hot and youd have a moisture problem. Also, You will have alot of air at first but once the compressor falls behind there will be no hope in saving it. Maybe a Dual pump/motor setup would work. This was common before screw compressors came about.

Charles brings up a good point, Just make sure that whatever kind of tank you use is ASME (as pointed out by Charles) and also assure that the tank and each cylinder head are equipped with a pressure pop off valves in the event of emergency

I got the tank from a manufacturing floor at our pharmacutical plant. With the equipment we buy here I am sure it is up to snuff. We spend millions of dollers just for paper weights.....wounder why drugs are so expensive.

I could be over exadurating (sp) on the size. All I know is Im about a foot or so away from being able to put my arms around it and it is easily over 6 foot tall. And Im not small by any means....hehe
