compresser motor fail

I have a husky brand 60 gallon compressor. I came out one afternoon and the motor would not turn electrically but turnred freely by hand. one pole of the pressure switch was also failed. I tried a different start capacitor ( I belive it was the start capacitor, it was the smaller of the two)and the motor turned but start belching smoke. I disconnected the capacitor and with the one capacitor connected and the other diconnected the motor woks fine. Anybody have any ideas? I may just have to find a used motor and replace it. Being a chinese motor I really dont want to spend any money on rewinding or repair.

Start capacitors are usually bigger and have higher MFD values then run capacitors. Does it use two start capacitors in parallel or have start and run capacitors?

If it were mine I'd bring it to the bench and check the following
- Test both windings and any shorts to ground.
- Inspect centrifical switch
- Test the caps
- Inspect for any bearing issues.

You also need to replace the separate pressure switch if it has burnt contacts.

It's my experience that most motor problems are other then burnt out windings but YMMV. A motor stuck in the starting phase for too long can fry the start winding.

took a start capacitor out of an old electric motor and it works like a champ. the microfarads are a bit different than the original but if it works what the heck.
