I have its twin running in my garage. They are nice and smooth, but are only about 5 CFM. It thumps along at 450 RPM and takes about 20 minutes to pump up to 160 psi when empty.

Here's my old DeVilbiss, I acquired it about 27 years ago, set it up at my Parents house, moved out 23 years ago & forgot all about it, This month I just went to get it, It still turns freely, no compression.

These are bad to the bone. I have seen some like this in paper mills around the northwest. I used to work for a company called Sulzer Escher Wyss, probably a division of the same outfit.

I am new to this forum. I have read through most of it and love all the different setups and good ideas in here. I wanted to contribute my humble setup.
I have a quincy compressor I got free from my uncle. It is a 30 gallon horizontal. The pump is a Quincy QTS-3. I have run calculations and it is giving me just under 7 CFM at 120psi. The motor is a 1.5hp Baldor 3-phase. I am using a VFD to run the 3-phase motor off of the 220 volt split phase at my house.
I added the intercooler a few days ago. (I still need to get a fan guard).
Let me know what you guys think.

I found this old DeVilbiss compressor at an old abandoned gas station ready for demolition 25 years ago, I ended up getting it for free, replaced the electric motor, changed the oil and this baby has purred along fine for years. It is the quietest compressor I have ever heard, a two lunger that keeps up with all of my tools including a high volume DA, that would have been worth paying a grand for in hindsight. DeVilbiss is historically known for its expertise in spray paint guns but I am a huge believer in their compressors.

Love all of the posts! Is anyone using an accumulater tank for auxillary storage? I have an attic with knee walls that I could use for additional air storage. I had set up a machine shop and prototype shop, the air guy suggested that we put in a big tank accumulater close to the shop.

No garage...no power....so I had to be a little creative. I'm based out of a storage unit for now. Gas powered Eaton 18hp 60gallon. Had to fabricate a gas tank (northern tool 10 gallon) and battery mount (41ah lawn mower battery). Still have to build a more sturdy base and all the cooling copper stuff...half way done with the copper grid then got A.D.D. and did something...can't remember but it wasn't finishing the cooling grid... I would post a pic...but I forgot to take a pic

I think this is my first Garage Journal post, even though I've been lurking for some time!

Anyway, to pre-commemorate the building of my auto shop this spring, I picked up a new-to-me compressor today!

It's a 1998 Snap-On, or so says the stamping on the tank.

Specs: 5HP / 18.5 SCFM @ 100PSI / 60 Gallons / 220V

There's a tag on it which says that it was assembled by Eagle in Quebec, as I saw mentioned earlier in this thread.

It runs beautifully and is a lot quieter than my old small compressor, but could use a bit of a refresh in places. Does anyone have an idea where I can get the filters shown?

Nothing anyone hasn't seen here, this is obviously one of the compressors you can get at any Tractor Supply Store. What makes mine special is that all the kids at school took up some money and bought their administrator (yeh, that's me) this compressor for my garage...they just wheeled this out of a room during an assembly and surprised me during teacher appreciation week. Usually during that week, we really focus on our teachers, and I make sure that I stay out of it. Well, last spring, the students and parents said "nothing doing" and got together to give this to me. I sure appreciate it.

This weeks bargain.

I picked up a compressor for $100 this week that is a bit of a Frankenstein, but I wanted the pump and motor to put on an upright 60G tank I have anyway.

It has a Quincy 216-39 pressurized oil system compressor pump, and a massive 3HP GE 230v/1PH industrial motor on it.

This shop-sized setup was bolted onto a portable tank on wheels to take to jobsites.
It took 3 men to pick this up and put it into my truck. It must weigh 350# as it sits.

This belongs to a friend of mine, he wanted to add a custom touch to it so he painted this ww2 fighter style shark mouth on it.

I asked him for pics after I saw this thread :D

Yeah, that looks cool - but it needs EYES!

I don't have anything to post pics of in here, I'm still running a oil(air)-less craftsman 30gal, which I HATE. Been scouring CL looking for an upgrade...

Hey guys, I am looking for a used (and cheap I hope!) refrigerated dryer for my humble setup. I am thinking I only need something in the 10 cfm range. Any ideas on where I could look for one? I am watching ebay, just thought i'd try here as well. Anybody got an old one they are willing to give up? Perhaps one that needs a recharging or something??
Let me know!

Nice discussion.
Love pcmeiners's (page 23 #455) setup and his explanations.

hey guys with small compressors: nothing wrong to have 110V small pancake as long as you like it and make work done.

Don't have my pictures, will post them later.

Bought it used in 2011, for $140. Oil lubed twin cylinder pump... tank looks to be about 20gallons.

Looking for info on it. It's a Porta Champ, by Champion Pneumatics. Model # is faint, but looks to be 20BV20PLA

The cat is one I got from neihbor where it sat outside for @ least the last 22yrs. He said his dad pulled it from an old service station in peoria. I got it for 50bucks .Looked lke a turd but the oil was up and clean, it had been run with a gas motor at one time and then a 3 phase, My dad had a 500 dollar 5hp engine just sitting there so I borrowed it!!! It ran but made no real air pressure ,but had 15psi of oil press. I tore the valves apart and ordered new discs and springs from Quincy they were rusty and broken!! I had the tank and other parts steel shot blasted and powdercoated by a local cat supplier company where I had an inside connection!!! Anyway after putting back together I added the decals just to make people ask! I love this thing it starts under no load and after it gets oil pressure it starts pumping, sounds cool and is quiet not annoying!! I recommend a Quincy 325 or 340 to anyone with demand for quality, this one was made in 1967 and still kicks ***. Oh I run Ammsoil 20wt in it and it seems much happier than with napa AC oil. Notice the cool charge cooler deal with drain so most water never ven made it to the tank.

Just found this thread. Most of this is documented in a thread I started when I was just figuring stuff out (here) but seems it's worthy of this thread too.

For years I had an cheap Husky compressor hooked up to the plumbing I had installed when we built the garage. I finally decided to do things right this year and with the help of GJ I now have the following:

SnapOn BRA5140H 40 gallon, 5.0 HP, 175 max. PSI compressor plumbed in series with an old Craftsman 60 gallon tank. I purchased both via Craigslist for $850. The compressor is in basically new condition. I have adjusted it down to output only 150 PSI given the old Crafstaman tank is only rated at 150 PSI. And I have no need for more than 150 PSI.
5566088253_5acc579828_b_d.jpg

Both tanks drain via an automatic drain valve.
5512628349_3a708fe99d_b_d.jpg

The devices mounted on the wall are two pump start relays that are used to turn the power to the compressor (the relay on the right) and the auto-drain (the relay on the left) on or off using my home control system. I currently have it setup to power on when the garage doors open, lights are turned on, or motion is detected in the garage. It then stays on for 1 hour unless occupancy is detected again.
5566087163_d321f09882_b_d.jpg

The compressor/tank are mounted in the attic above the "far" stall of the the 3 car garage. This space was intended for a compressor when I built the house and therefore I already had copper plumbed up there. I ended up running another copper run while installing it for another outlet in the ceiling (see below). Having the compressor in the attic is great; it really quiets it down and keeps it out of the way. Having the automated power on/off gives me great peace of mind that the compressor won't run out of control if a fitting goes bad.

This shot shows where the attic is. There is a door you can't see in this picture that is normally closed.
5432855356_4b0021c8ca_b_d.jpg

I have three drops: One on the far side of the garage where I used to have the old Husky compressor. It is capped off. One is on the back wall by the drill press in the picture below. It also is just capped off for now, but I do have a filter/regulator for it when I decide to get a blast cabinet.
5604952734_07b1671fcd_b_d.jpg

The other drop is mounted on the ceiling. It has two filter/regulators. One set at ~80psi and connected to my Griot's reel. This runs my impact wrench etc... Te other filter/regulator is set to 150psi and it is used to power my BendPak RJ-45 bridge jack on my lift. I have not yet hooked up the permanent hose from that coupling to the lift; it's on my list of things to do.
5601889966_766b60fa58_b_d.jpg

I'm really happy with the way this turned out. And it's great having air just available all the time. I wish I would have done this earlier!

You guys have some nice machines! I just picked up a running IR 242d5 with an 80 gallon tank (FREE!). Replaced the 3ph motor with a 220v 5hp motor. I'm giving the tank a good cleaning, paint and a UT check just to be safe. I'd like to rebuild the pump, but I am having trouble finding a tech/service manual for it. Any one here have a good lead? Maybe my google skills ****, but there seems to be a lot of empty links. The IR tech site doesn't even list my machine. :(

Just a day or so after the fire, I got a PM from Jeff at BendPak. I was very touched to say the least. There’s a reason they have so many fans. Here’s my new 2 stage compressor, check out the size of the Baldor motor. For the full specs here is the web page.

This was not a donation but he made me “an offer I could not refuse”

I still need to run air lines, but I recently bought a Quincy compressor for my garage. 60 gallon, 2 stage. It was more then I originally planned on spending, but it was worth it.
