Just to report back in.
jrsulo was right on. I spoke with a exceptionally knowledgeable gentleman at aircompressorsales.com and he explained to me that some of the old Kellogg 331's were made without the tapped holes in the head for the unloader and you therefore had to "tee" into the exhaust/tank supply lines with a line coming from the centrifugal unloader on the pump housing opposite the flywheel. Since the pressure switch on my tank includes an unloader this process is taken care of through the port above the check valve into my tank. He told me I can just plug up the elbow to the unloader on the pump housing and never look back!

Can we get some details on the buttons and the box? I need to do something very similar.

Also can anyone give me some advice? I found a Kellogg American 60 gallon with a 332tv pump and a baldor single phase motor. I don't know how old it is because the owner can't find a tag. He is asking around $500.00 for it. The whole unit has been painted so I don't know exactly what type of condition it is in. What should I look at when I go see it? The owner said he can plug it up and let me hear/see it run. I am asking the gurus so I know what to look at.

Thanks

What HP motor? Motor speed? When was the tank last hydrostatically tested? Single stage or double stage compressor ( is a 332tv a dry sump?) ?

The hydro test question is a good bargining point ... IF ... you know how to do the test yourself. Older than 10 years, I'd want to test it before use maybe even make the sale contingent on passing a hydro test. Your call.

Steve - these are all great questions. Unfortunately I don't know the answer to them. I also don't now how to do a hydro test. The seller did say it help 120 PSI for over a week however I am not sure how to take that.

The control box is an duplex controller we build. Its design to integrate into an existing two compressor setup seamlessly with no in box wiring. (DC Micro bulkhead connectors on the box and 4x two-conductor whips supplied.) All you need is a little wiring know how so you can wire up the field i/o - pressure switch side(s) and the motor starter coil side(s).

I built an addition to my shop, it's 4' x 12' lg for my 90 gal tanks, compressor & Misc garden tools. I used about 200' of 3/4" copper tube for heat exchanger & overhead lines for air system.
I need my shop quite for just my music.

Well I went to see a guy about a used Kellogg American but it didn't work out. The guy tried raising the price on me after he had already agreed to a lower price. Hate people like that!

So the search for an old American 60 gallon compressor in Austin, TX continues!

Ingersoll-Rand "Garage Mate" 20 gal and a HF hose reel. My garage was converted from a carport and is 17' x 17' so space is very much at a premium - this fits perfectly into a space that is otherwise difficult to utilize, as the hinge for the old style flat garage door swings through there about 4' from the floor.

Quincy 5hp two stage 60gallon I got for christmas from my MOM! In my new rented shop. I took her to northern tool with me so she could get some stuff and I was drooling all over this, well she bought me it because she knows the motor swap in my jeep cost me way to much!

Now we are gonna rewire the shop so we know that it will have plenty of juice for this and welders

Thoughts on the Garage Mate?

I'm considering this, and it's big brother the 30 gal one.

They are expensive, no doubt!

It was just over $400 from Sears, so not out of line with Craftsman or Husky or any of the other name brands. It came down to a choice between the IR and a similar sized De Walt, they were within $50 of each other but the DW was oil-less, and just seemed like it wasn't as well put together.

So far the IR has been great, it is quiet and runs all my cheap HF air tools just fine :)

It's been a while I didn't post something but I have to share this one.
My old Felisatti dual stage compressor was on his last leg and I bought a new Brown compressor to replace it.
650liter per min, 5.5hp triphase engine. It's a beast and it works nicely. My pneumatic tools now work as they should!

COMPRESSEUR.jpg

I would like to rebuild the old one as a back up, but can not find the brand of the compressor head. Maybe a good disasembling, cleaning and checking should be enough?

I finally got a good compressor!!! Guy posted this on CL this morning and I jumped on it. He said it's 8 months old. It's in perfect condition. It's a single stage but should work perfect for the personal vehicle work I do.

Now it's time to get it in place and hooked up for the mods to begin.

You know when you win a item on ebay that you don't really want. This is one of them. Can't really complain because i only paid $330 australian dollars for it. I thought it may of sold for alot more.
It's a diving compressor powered by a volkswagen engine.
4 stage pump with the forth stage gauge showing 8500psi
All Atlas Copco made in west germany. The seller told me it was a late sixties compressor that was originally owned by the Australian Navy and used for a backup.
Upon doing a inspection of the engine number and date search it shows the engine as a 1200cc late February 1961 motor.
It's been covered all its life and all the tinwork on the motor is in amazing condition. It is still 6volt.
I don't know how accurate the hour meter is but it is only showing 154 hours and looking at the condition it is in, i have no doubts that it would be far off.
The engine has a rev setter on it and will run at 3000rpm. Upon getting it home i hooked up a battery and with the little bit of fuel left in the filter it fired right up, blew a little smoke upon starting but then cleared itself and ran beautifully.
Only problem i have is..... What to do with it?

I'm sure you can get decent money for the VW motor. I would go to some town that has alot of diving shops, boats and triple your money.

That's awesome. For no other reason than you own it. I wonder what 8500psi would do to a Harbor Freight 1/2" impact? :scared:

Just picked this up from Craigslist:

It is very clean, I added a ball valve to the tank drain, changed the oil and the belts, and wired it up. Runs good.

The tank is a Buckeye, looks like 80 gallon.

Anyone recognize the pump? Looks like a rolair.

I'm assuming its made in China??

Here is mine in its little house - I'm finishing the venting tonight... I hope. Maybe even install the sound deaden-er too.

Pressure testing things. We have one that will quickly pump water to over 10,000psi :eyecrazy: But we often test around 6500psi - and ours isn't that big - think bread loaf size.

It just amazes me that a compressor device that small can put out water at much PSI! I have never seen one like that before. Thanks for the info, I am going to look some stuff up:)

My Kellog American, bought it out of a mill about 30 years ago, put a new single 5 HP Baldor and mag starter on it, and been using it ever since. Compressor head had just been replaced before I got it. At the slow speed it runs at, it is very quiet, but is even quiter in its own little shed on the side of the shop. Generates very little condensation, go weeks between draining, and still get very little. One of the best tools I ever bought.

Here is my 1955 Quincy 325 ROC 4 that I picked up on the local classifieds. Repainted it (don't love the colors might redo it), put a baldor 5 hp on it with mag starter. I spin it about 850 RPM and it has more than enough air for me. I think the tank is 100 gal. Since I'm in a older urban neighborhood, I couldn't get the truck close enough to where I wanted it set up. It took 5 guys to carry it the 100+ feet to where it is. The plan this summer is to build a shed and finally plumb the garage. Right now it is under a "classy" silver tarp.

Here is the girlfriend and I loading the pump. There was no easy way to get that 300 lb beast up there until I had an idea.

Bummer some property manager offered me a Kellogg-American 462 TV and tank on Tuesday. She said if I picked it up and removed it from the facility I could have it free. Alas I already have a Kellogg 331 and no free time to pick up and potentially rebuild another. If your planning a trip to the San Francisco Bay Area this might still be available? Of course you would need a 25HP motor to drive this beast, might be able to sneak by with a 15-20HP though, heh.
