Compression - Show Off Your Compressor

Here is my 1955 Quincy 325 ROC 4 that I picked up on the local classifieds. Repainted it (don't love the colors might redo it), put a baldor 5 hp on it with mag starter. I spin it about 850 RPM and it has more than enough air for me. I think the tank is 100 gal. Since I'm in a older urban neighborhood, I couldn't get the truck close enough to where I wanted it set up. It took 5 guys to carry it the 100+ feet to where it is. The plan this summer is to build a shed and finally plumb the garage. Right now it is under a "classy" silver tarp.

Here is the girlfriend and I loading the pump. There was no easy way to get that 300 lb beast up there until I had an idea.

I've got two of those old Quincey's. Made about the same time. They will run forever.

Here's the 80 gal Sandborn I got at an auction in August, it has since replaced the blue 60 gal unit. This shows it needed alot of tlc, I've cleaned it, painted, changed the oil, and a new solberg filter. I'v got me some air!!

My Kellog American, bought it out of a mill about 30 years ago, put a new single 5 HP Baldor and mag starter on it, and been using it ever since. Compressor head had just been replaced before I got it. At the slow speed it runs at, it is very quiet, but is even quiter in its own little shed on the side of the shop. Generates very little condensation, go weeks between draining, and still get very little. One of the best tools I ever bought.

I have the same compressor in exactly the same motley color. If you ever need head or valve parts let me know. I have a complete rebuild kit that was given to me with the compressor. And yes the compressor and rebuild kit were given to me for taking it out of the building it was in. The compressor had 32 hrs on it and had been maintained per a pm schedule.

I'm not sure of the brand or type of pump. I really have not looked at the unit since I got it and do not know alot about compressors .. yet..
I ran it at the sellers house and it ran great and cycled on /off
I was not planning on getting a larger compressor but couldnt pass on this.

I had some time and looked at the compressor today . The tag on the tank and pump are Devilbis 80 gal. There are no other tags or decals for the pump.

I have to find some "friends" to help lug it down the basement stairs now.

Your picture angle is a little deceiving, but I'm pretty sure that your tank is 60 gallon or less. Otherwise, I feel confident that an 80 gallon tank would not fit through any doorway, much less down the steps of most/all townhouses.

I got this 7.5 HP, 4 cylinder, 80 gallon, 717 pound compressor into the basement by taking it apart. Motor: 151 pounds, 4 cylinder pump: 309 pounds, 80 gallon tank: 257 pounds.

I wish it was the correct color instead of Ford blue. I did wonder why it was two toned when I got it, but now I see why.

I also didn't realize my after cooler pipe was beat to hell until I see it next to yours. I knew it was bad but not that bad. Oh well.

I painted it myself--lol It's Safety Blue. I got it from a service station
turned cigerette store. 1964 is the year on the tank.

I run two compressors. For heavy duty work I will run my dewalt which makes great pressure but is so loud I can't listen to my music...

For lighter work I run this little dual tank (its labeled "gmc syclone" like the truck? Im sure its made by someone else). Its plugged in-line under my furnace next to my bench, it is so quiet you barely hear it.

I am not 100% happy with this one, but probably too late. I was searching and searching for a decent compressor within my sub-500.00 range. First garage, first compressor, but with the knowledge I have gathered from this very site, I STILL purchased a Crapsman air compressor haha. My detached has its own electric and my neighbor is an electrician. I could of very easily attained 220v and went with a better compressor, BUT I gave in to my immediate wants and scooped this gem up off of Craigslist. Its basically brand new. Guy got it through work to wrench on his sports car, but then found out he had twin girls on the way, got rid of the car, and it sat for 3 yrs. Said he NEVER started it up. Threw in an impact gun/rachet/air hammer and hose. 2 hp, 33G, 150 PSI, CFM's dont matter as I read a lot of them being false for these compressors. I honestly didn't need a super compressor, but an oiled unit would of been nice for a few less DB's. Oh well, this will work fine for me. Just airing/rotating tires, misc nailer use, clean-up, misc truck maintenance. Won't be using it every day, so this will be fine for me. Honestly, I am happy b/c I wanted a compressor and got one...

I have a couple of these compressors. I don't think you can beat the quality of these pumps with anything else out there, old or new. Would be interested in your progress on putting yours back together and any problems or other issues you may run into while assembling it...what part of the country are you in?

I have had that exact same compressor that you have for about 6yrs now. I hate the noise, but i love it in all the other ways. I would like someday to move up to a 60gallon less noisey compressor, but this one gets the job(s) done for now.

I have that compressor as well. It is indeed way too loud, however,it is more than adequate for my needs (car maintenance, air nailers, blowing off the workbench, inflating tires & balls, etc). One of these days when I get some disposable income, I'm going to buy a horizontal oil-lubed compressor (either Craftsman Professional or Puma).

One of these days when I get some disposable income, I'm going to buy a horizontal oil-lubed compressor (either Craftsman Professional or Puma).

Good to know. I have been using it and I am officially happy. I have plenty of projects to throw its way as it warms up and I start really making this new home ours! It will be fine until it blows, which by your post seems it will take a while, but I am OK with that. I would like to add a small outdoor pad and shelter for it as the pump does ring my ears. I find myself stepping out as it fills, but again, no often enough to really bother me.

Thats all I use it for so it should be fine. I do like to buy the best, and I usually do, but its time to smarten up money-wise so this purchase made me feel a little better, considering that.

Go pick up an HF air stapler. It comes in real handy with a LOT of stuff.

One of the first things I used it on was reupholstering the dining room chairs. She was VERY happy. Now she doesn't even ask when I add a new air tool.

In your Right picture, it looks like you end the drop with an elbow and quick connect. The copper line acts as a great air cooler so lots of water is going to condense and fill up that drop. It's going to be like a water faucet when you hook up an air tool.

If you replace that elbow with a Tee and extend the drop a foot or two with a valve at the bottom, the water will collect in the extension. I collected a quarter-cup of water yesterday, running a die-grinder and air saw for about a half-hour. The die grinder got cold but no frost formed and it wasn't spitting water (a problem when I didn't have dry air).

I've been looking for an older compressor and found one. 60 gallon buckeye boiler horizontal tank, Ajax AP-5 two stage compressor. 5hp single phase mo tor. I had to take motor and pump off to fit it into my car. Got it unloaded, moved, put back together and wired and she runs right up 175. Seems to cut back at about 150. It isn't so quiet that you don't know it is there but it's pretty goo. Damn thing needs 50. Cubic feet in many shop.
Any leads for a manual? Damn thing filled the back of my car

They were clearing out all the campbell hausfeld large compressors for Kolbalt Brand Compressors. Runs great, can you believe my wife asked me why i needed that thing? Don't really remember I was building my home for five years at that time I use to go by that specific Lowes. They always had a good deals must have been the manager they had at the time, I once got a Dyson animal vacume cleaner in a damaged box but it was new for 117 bucks. They also had good tool clearance from time to time, not the case anymore although I got a Dawalt 12 volt drill that was returned with a burned motor a month ago for 20 bucks with charger and 2 batteries, sent it to the repair location and got it fixed under warranty

Just curious and need to ask How often you drain the tank with it up there, do you have an extended drain thru the platform it sits on? Not looking like an easy task with that rigging.

I can appreciate the desire for floor space, but a compressor needs maintenance from time to time, oil change/water dumped and belts every few years.
