I love this board...after recently joining I felt it was time for me to contribute.

I recently picked this compressor up and was looking for some others to share their systems with the rest of the board.

Mine is a Kellogg-American, Model 321 TV
2 Cylinders
Bore LP/HP – 3.25 & 1.75
Stroke – 3
HP Range – 1, 1.5 & 2
Speed RPM 1750 Motor – 350/823
PSI – 50 to 200
Normal Free CFM – 3.5/8.8

Most of the information can be found here:
http://www.aircompeq.com/ka.htm
...and I can only assume that I have the higher power unit. :)

I have yet to want for air with it. If I open the main valve, it will blow strong all day long.

P7102702.jpg

I think I will either rebuild or upgrade the pump and motor in the next few years as I would love more power...wouldn't we all? :)

The current plumbing is only temporary until I get the walls done and can run better plumbing. It's only a 1 car garage, but I want a separate unit for oiled air (tools) and one for dry air (blaster/paint).

The best part is it was a hand-me-down and cost me a whopping $0.00!!!!

I bought mine used also...
7.5 hp, 2 stage w/ 80 gal tank.

I just got the pressure switch fixed last weekend so it starts and stops all by itself now.
I ran the hard lines this spring. it sure is nice not having air hose running all over to trip on.

Speedaire unit...
30 gallon
can be wired to run 240/120.
2.0HP
5.7 cfm @ 90psi
4.8cfm @ max (135psi)
875 rpm

It doesn't make huge HP.. but the cfm range is consistant and accurate (if not under rated) since its an industrial type pump. I can run an air ratchet or impact gun on it for quite awhile before the she kicks back on. Then again I use good quality air tools that have low air consumption. Haven't done any painting with it yet... soon enough though.

Here is my 80 gallon 2 stage that I got a couple months ago. I got this new for $600. A good deal I thought, although not as good as bmwpower's.

Here is mine. I got it in a trade. It says it's 80 gallon. Looks like 3 cyl. Don't know the HP. Moved it once by hand, it's HEAVY.

Well, my garage is not quite finished. So I don't have a proper compressor yet. You could call my current compressor 'portable'. I belive it has a 190 h.p. engine. The compressor is 10.3 ci which is sorta small, but pressure switch is set to turn off at about 145 psi and all the fittings and hoses are 1/2" so I get plenty of air too run an impact or air up my 33" tires. Pics are here. http://www.imagestation.com/album/pictures.html?id=2134193148

I love the on-board unit!!! It's perfect for a trail rig!

Anyone that does a lot of over the road driving should also have one of those in their car. I keep a 12V 200 psi Black & Decker unit in my car at all times. You never know when you need air!

That's exactly what it is. It pulls double duty as a work truck and a weekend warrior. I put about 25,000 miles on it every year. I have 4"x4" back bumper plumbed for air that give me about 1.5 gal of storage with an additional 2 gal tank (not currently installed) inside the frame rails. It will fill the bumper from 0psi to 145psi in less than a minute at idle. 1.5 gallons of air doesn't sound like much, but using 1/2" air lines gives it enough Oooomph to break just about any bolt loose with an impact. I can usually break a bolt loose and spin it off with one shot. Sometimes I can even spin off a couple of bolts without waiting for more air. Since it will fill the tank in less than a minute the wait is never long.

I have a Quincy 5 HP with a twin cylinder, pressure oil feed bearings, and the optional oil filter. Mine is portable in the fact that it has casters mounted under the original shipping skid. My garage is a mess right not, moving stuff from one corner to another trying to make room for all that has to go in there before it snows. I know, I am running out of time.

The specs on mine are as follows:
Saylor-Beall model 75-80 splash lubricated-two stage compressor with electric Baldor motor running at about 1725 rpm, single phase, with a magnetic starter, Asme tank mounted, 5: HP, weight: 612, tank size: 80, pump model: 705, pump rpm: 845, DVLD CFM@175 psi, 17.3

Just finished wiring it to power yesterday complete with service disconnect box with time delayed fuses.

I still need to change air piping to filter to 3/4'. So far I've only got it at 3/4' from the ball valve to the point where it goes into a flexible pipe and then to ceiling.

Here's a couple of pictures of part of one of the compressors i work on, but they are not actually in my garage:pimpflash
The're made by a company called Sulzer Burckhardt, put out 1600cfm, at 2000psi, have five seperate compression stages, are watercooled between stages and require an 800hp electric motor to drive them. :bounce:

Finally, a thread I can post a pic in. I'm still in the process of getting my side of my 2 car garage to the point where I can work.

RayJay, that's the one I was going to get before my wife bought me this one for Christmas.

BTW, that's a hug, not me trying to lift it.

If you ever wondered how to unload one of these beasts without a forklift or any friends....

It's a Delta 2 stage 80 gal. 175 psi kicks in at 145 psi, 16.0scfm @ 90 psig. I think it's 5HP with 6.5HP peak. It's the one Sam's carries. I've been drooling over it for about 3 years. It's a single phase 240V 30A. I don't have it bolted down or wired yet. I wasn't quite ready for it yet. I can't decide how I want to plumb it. Been thinking 3/4" K copper for the main line and 1/2" K copper drops. I was thinking about making a bypass and sitting a galvanized tub outside with a coil of 3/4" M in it that I could put water and ice in for media blasting, not sure it's necessary though.

did a lot of reading and after looking at it all ( even right in the owners manual for IR it states do not use plastic pipe , rubber hose or lead tin solder joints in th compress air system)

read the pdf here and I'm going with black pipe 3/4 mains and 1/2 drops

Nice setups guys!!!

I don't understand what problem there would be soldered copper lines. I work for a mojor AC manufacturer & we manufacture thousands of AC units piped with copper line that are tested to over 400PSI. These are directly coupled to compressors (vibration) and start up torque. A properly brazed joint should not fail in 200 psi air service.

Where do you find US made black iron pipe. All the plumbing supply houses around here only stock the Made in China pipe and fittings. I can't remember when I last saw US pipe available.

Well here is my Kellog American (an couple year old pic),

It is also a 321, you might notice I still have the original 2hp induction motor on mine, it is HUGE and HEAVY. It is actually pretty cool seeing the sparks when it is running because it uses brushes! I actually had to use my engine hoist to get the motor up there because it was too heavy for me to lift!

Mine put out about 8CFM at 150.

Mikey,

I noticed that you do not have the check valve on your unit. Where it enters the tank there should be a check valve when the unit is not on a power stroke /pumping so there is no pressure on the pump assembly. You can see mine under my right arm where it enters the tank.

I don't know if will give you any problems with pump life or with the total amount you can get out of the pump.

Just thought that I would mention it.

No chlorine in the buckets, actually my glass bead are in the buckets because they seal well and keep it dry when I am not using it. Thanks for the heads up anyway.

Deja vu on unloading the compressor. I ended up taking the belt guard off and slipping a chain through. The engine crane had enough reach to lift the pallet 1/4" off the bed, after I let some air out of the back tires of the truck. We had two 10' 2x4's slipped through the base of the pallet for leverage. My wife drove the truck out from under it while two of us kept the pallet level. I would have gotten pictures but it was 10:30 at night. The compressor is an 80 gallon two stage 5hp Eaton.

I'm working on getting the compressor mounted, wired, and connected to the copper air line this weekend. I'll post a few pics once it's in place.

To be honest, I can't tell the difference between made in USA and made in China iron pipe or fittings. I have asked at the plumbing supply house if they have had any comments from the plumbers and they said no one seems to care. I would rather have a USA product, but can't find it anywhere around here. I think that it is sold more on price and the perceived quality is the same. I really wonder if there is actually a quality difference? Only time will tell. If I were burying it in a wall, then I think that I might care more, but for air lines, I don't think it will matter.

I have had a problem with the home depot fitting leaking on me last couple of times I have used them , I think they just went to a cheaper line than they used to carry

When I put iron pipe together, I use pipe dope and then wrap some cotton thread around the male pipe threads. This makes for a tight fit and stops all leaks. I never use Teflon tape on new pipe threads, since the sharp edges of the pipe thread will just cut the tape to shreds. I have used with good success liquid Teflon pipe sealant. When using the cotton thread, make sure to always wind it on the threads in the direction of the threads, otherwise, the cotton thread will just unravel and jam up. I have tried lots of different pipe dopes in the past, and the one that I like best is the new blue stuff, but I don't remember the name of it. It is for just about all chemicals, oils, and gasses.

What is your fear of Chlorine and sparks?

I'd be more worried about the chlorine tearing up everything in the shop, more than being worried about sparks and chlorine.

My compressor is a HD special that was bought after my nearly 20-year-old Craftsman finally bit the dust after 15 years of storage and then daily use.

I'm embarrassed to say that I'm using PVC pipe for the plumbing, but it won't be in the new shop once it gets built.
