One picture of my IR 2 stage 5 HP 80 gal unit taken from post #82 of the thread on Pvc Pipe Or Copper For Air Line? where I outlined my method of piping air in my shop.

IRComptempwire1.jpg

The electrical hookup is temporary until I get a magnetic starter for it.

I will have to get pics tonight. Mine is a home assembled unit with an old horizontal tank from a buddy's old shot in the *** compressor off his farm. The pump is a Schultz pump 29 CFM at 850 RPM, The motor is a Weg 5HP at 1750RPM 230V 1PH. I still need to redo the starter and plumbing from just a hose and reel. I get sick of tripping over hoses. I have the pump slowed down a bit to 585 RPM which reduces air delivery somewhat but I can run my HVLP gun with no problems.

electrical question for the ones that know. I see a red button on the end of the motor. If that is what it is in the picture of the IR above. (nice compressor)
Is a motor starter required if the motor is internally protected? Of course I am assuming that the red button is a thermal overload. Would a breaker not suffice for this?

Thanks

Scott

You do need a starter for the motor. If not, you will burn up the pressure switch and it will stick in the run position more than likely. I learned the hard way, one motor and one switch later.

That is what I figure will happen sooner or later too so I will only be using the lightweight contacts in the pressure switch to pull in the 24 volt coil of my magnetic starter. I also want that coil circuit wired remotely with switch and light next to the shop entry door so I can flip it on or off as I come and go. I don't want the compressor cycling, maybe due to an air leak - bust hose or whatever, when I'm not present.

Was @ a bodyshop/service department for a dealership and saw these 3 out back - 2 BIG I.R.'s 15 horse T30's I think and a Quincy. I'd take one

I wonder when the last hydrostatic test was performed on that rusty Quincy receiver. Don't think I'd walk or park close to that one.

That is just oily dirt on the outside of the compressors. These were all outside in some crappy coverings. I assume that 1 was body shop, 1 for service and 1 for the paint booth. I walked up to them to get a closer look - one of the IR's kicked in but I didn't hear the Quincy.

I don't think you could run out of air with those 3 running, but as mentioned the electric bill would kill you :shocking:

Lots of serious power here. Here's mine....someday it'll grow up! Not much, but it does what I want, namely keeping the tires full!

Nothing special...just a Craftsman setup.

I like that hose reel I have, I stick the tire chuck, blowgun, and something else in there, works OK. This is 2 garages ago. New garage will have a "real" air setup.

It's funny looking at how clean that bench is! That was the night I finished building it.

i STOLE this one...found it on craigslist, called, left message. A woman called back two days later, said it was her husbands (they'd divorced) and she wanted it out of the garage. she also said she'd had all kinds of people calling on it. I thought it was the nice $800 Husky at Home Depot that I'd been coveting, but it turned out to be the $2000 one that you have to order online. It came with the magnetic starter and everything, weighs 550 lbs and makes 25 CFM at 175 psi. Needless to say, I sprinted over to her place and liberated the compressor from her garage. It looks like it's never been run, the oil was clean and the filter is spotless. The price? 500 bucks!

I got this ~2 years ago when Lowes was ending this CH line to start carrying Kobalt branded compressors...I paid $100.00 bucks for it brand new...not bad for a 60gallon, 6.5HP compressor! :D

Just thought I would post up in here to keep all the compressor pics together.

Atlas Copco (rebadged Devair) TAPV 5052 5hp, two stage, 80 gallon tank, homebrew aftercooler and a franzinator to get the moisture out.

Thats the same compressor I have, in post #80 above. It was $1699 when I bought it and is $1799 now.. Yours is about the same vintage as mine. The pump is on the left and it has the copper tube to the pressure switch's head pressure relief from the check valve. Later ones have plastic tube to the pressure switch and the newest have the pump and motor positions reversed. Yours probably has USA on the end of the pump.

Question about motor starters. I searched northern tool and didn't find them. Any ideas where I might find more details on them?

Here is my "New" compressor. Bought it at a moving sale, along with the Craftsman belt/disc sander. Paid $400 for the pair, and the guy threw in an extra sanding belt, 25 feet of air hose, and a coil of 220v Bus Drop cable (~40ft), which I'll use to make an extension cord for my Mig Welder. Heck, I think the wire alone is worth about $100 at today's copper prices...

These are the only two pics I have of mine right now. I will try to get closer pics later. It is a Schultz 7.5 HP 29 CFM 2 stage pump and a Weg 5HP @ 1750 184T frame motor. I home brewed the assembly ten years ago with a tank I got from a buddy of mine's old busted compressor.

Dats an Big ole Fat TanK !

I never seen a 7.5 hp Eaton with 34 CFM . Maybe a 10 HP but nothing for 7.5

You'll get some stuff done with her.

EDIT: I just checked there web site and the 7.5 is 26 CFM on 1 and or 3 phase units. The 10hp is 34 CFM .

Dooh!! I was looking at the manual and that is the pump output.

If I put a 10 hp motor on it, it would put out 34..

It is run at 600 rpm with my 7.5 and puts out 26 @175.

Here is my new baby, 5 HP 80 Gal 2 stage. Very similar to a Eaton and about the same cost but I did not have to pay for shipping or wait for it to arrive. I opted for belt guard mounted aftercooler which is supposed to take out 80% of the moisture from the air. I am ordering a Harbor Freight auto drain and will be building an air intake silencer to make this think super quiet.

engnerdan looks like a REAL compressor. I'd be interested in information on the final/optional aftercooler if you could steer me in the right direction for that. I can't make out in the photos where you will take air from the compressor tank (tie-in).

If that aftercooler does take out 80% of the water, then, I would plum it differently with a good size drop leg with drain valve at the bottom to catch most of that water before it goes into the tank but then I guess you would have TWO places to drain instead of one - maybe not something everybody would opt to do. I figure the less water in my tank, the better it will be.

How will you achieve the intake silencer?

Should be no problem draining to the tank. Just get an electric auto drain for like $50 on eBay and drain it without worries.

bmwpower if your reply is aimed at me - I'm really not interested in an auto drain. Fine that others use/like them but I want to see how much water is collecting in the tank and the condition of that water. Something I learned 45 years ago in the USAF and has served me well, so I'll continue the practice. I use constant purge when I paint and after 35 years of spraying (not my day job) I had a drop of water reach the gun only one time because I forgot to set the purge. I have not had enough time to check out the new compressor to see if things will be different but I do have a chiller should it be necessary to incorporate it.
