Compressor Advice

Hello,

I am looking to pick up a used compressor to replace my noisy as hell craftsman oil less. I am in the process of redoing my garage with flooring, lighting and new air plumbing so figured now was a good time for a upgrade. I would love to pick up a 2 stage for another shop im setting up but figured one of these might work for the home garage. Primarily air tools, sheet metal work, etc. Weekend warrior stuff.

Here are a couple I found.

Option #1
60G Sanborn G500BPL60V - $300.00

Option #2
60G Quincy QTS-3 - $250

Should I pick one up or look for something else?

Any opinions would be appreciated.

I wish I could find a decent used and affordable made in the USA compressor around these parts. Both look like they are similar and I would be proud to have either in my garage.

I bought a used 5 HP 80 gallon Emglo 2 stage about 12 years ago and still going strong, just ordered a rebuild kit well deserved as I have run the absolute snot out of it

I had a smaller Sanborn. Won't say anything nasty about it, it worked as advertised.

Druthers ? I'd have the Quincy.

Anyone have any spec's on the Quincy, I am having a hard time finding them. I got the specs on the Sanborn.

My CM Oil less is deafening!!! I have heard the Sanborn run and you can stand next to it and talk pretty normally. I assume the Quincy would be about the same? They are both going outside the garage now, so its more important for the neighbors, lol.

That's what I was thinking, just wanted to confirm my insanity. The guy who has it is slow to respond, so I gotta stay on him. Anybody got specs on the model?

That's not a great Quincy. That's a 2 HP pump. Single stage, splash lube, reed valve machine. When they take a dump its cause the reed valves break and chew the **** out of the cylinders. $250 isn't a terrible price but frankly that's not the kind of machine that made Quincy their name for bulletproof machines that last forever. Those are ****** little pumps that make a lot more noise than they make air.

It's better than the other machine you posted, but for $250 you should be able to score a used QR in need of an overhaul.

I'd go with the Quincy. While both are reed valve compressors(not the best design but the cheapest to manufacture), the Quincy is easy to get parts for should the need arise.
Worked on compressors for the last 50 years and Quincy makes the best compressor under 7.5HP.

Heck maybe I should keep looking. Don't think 2hp is going to keep up with a DA.. He is suppose to send a photo of the motor plate today.

Neither one of those is going to keep up with a DA. You need a proper 5 HP machine in the 18 - 22 CFM range. This is the realm of the QR-325. That's what you should be looking for.

$300 is overpriced??? Not here in Tampa......$300 is a good deal for a 5hp compressor...

I really relate, as I had one of those loud oil-less SOB's for several years...and it sucked.

I went with a used Craftsman 5.0 HP with a 2 stage compressor. A guy actually gave it to me for free. He was moving and didn't have room for it. I actually felt guilty about that and went and bought him a nice portable compressor that would fit in his new garage AND still feel like a I got a smoking deal.

It does a good job keeping up with all my air tools. I ran black pipe around the garage for hookups and even attached a nice retractable hose reel to it. It' s the berries!

My point is...it would have been just as hard to run all the pipe and stuff for a little compressor...but the 5.0HP and 2 stage makes it quiet and gives me lots of air. Suggest you keep looking.

BTW...the big ones like this are 220V.

who uses a DA in a home shop when you can use a festool ets150 with dust extraction?

I am sure Quincy has a website you could check out for specs...
that thing will outwork any box store unit that you could buy new today and it is AMERICAN MADE; I am sure you could get parts for that unit as well, for a long time to come if need be
I have discovered that buying a good used tool can be better than buying something brand new

how much DA'ing do you figure you ahve to do? a fender now and then, or constant professional body shop volume??? that also weighs in.

A DA was probably a poor example, it would be rare in my home garage as I have other places to do that type of work. More along the line of angle grinder, nibbler, etc for sheet metal and aluminum work. Small job stuff, for cars and motorcycles. The Quincy is down to $230 so I don't think I can pass it up, I can always turn it later for that money.

Anything I should check out today when I go to talk a look at it?

open the drain at the bottom of the tank and see what comes out; a little water is OK but if you get a whitish greyish oily mess then the compressor rings are starting to get tired.
Go with $200 cash and see if they "bite"

Well I decided to go a different direction and pulled the trigger on this today.

Quincy 7.5 HP "Quite Run" Single Phase Compressor. It was purchased in Dec 2010 and has 192hrs on it.

Picked it up for $1300, which I think is a pretty sweet deal.

Let me know what you think.

You can't generally get a 192 hr 7.5 piston machine for that much. How big is the tank?

80g... I ask him to dig out the paperwork to be sure, it might be a 120, but I believe it is an 80. Won't know for sure until I put a tape on it.

With a 5 hp it is 6.7 cfm at 90 psi

That would be my choice.
