I'm looking for a compressor for my home shop to support occasional DA sander / spray gun use. There's a Champion VRV5-6 for sale on Craigslist, for $800. Its a 2 stage compressor, 60 gallon tank. I got the SN and called the manufacturer - the unit was shipped in 2002 - and was given instructions for a pump up test to check the compressor. I'm going soon to check it out in person.

The trouble is - I have no way to get it home. Its not very far, so I could rent the home depot truck as one option.

Is this a fair price for a good compressor, assuming another $100 or so to get it home? I'm open to all tips and suggestions. I'm half way through the "show off your compressor" thread... but the boss is walking down the hall too often!

If you've got something that will tow it, you'd be better off renting a small utility trailer. Those things are hellacious to get out of something as high as a truck bed without a forklift.

Champions are my favorite, but what's worth depends on a lot of things and I couldn't begin to say, without at least seeing a picture of it. IF it's in excellent condition and has no defects, then that should be a pretty good market price.

Update - I bought it. I left the guy a deposit and I'm going back to pick it up in the next day or so. I've lined up a few buddies, one with a truck...!

The compressor aired up from 0 to 175 PSI in just over 5 minutes, exactly as the Champion tech support said it should. No air leaks, no oil leaks, and I could see the oil was a light amber color in the sight glass. It ran quiet. There was a fair amount of water in the drain, and while dirty it wasn't nasty rusty when I drained it.

He's also selling black pipe, a regulator / filter and hose for $150 to 250 depending how much of it I want. I'm still waffling on that side of things.

Thanks for the tips guys - I'll post pictures when I get it home.
