Compressor air up time

I just acquired my first 2-stage 80 gallon compressor off the list last week. Its a DevilBiss unit with a 6.5 hp motor and compressor head rated at ~16 cfm at 175 psi. The pump model is ABP-459. The internet says this is an inferior pump due to the head bolt configuration. It runs and pumps up but sounds like it might have a knock. Is this what 2 stage compressors are supposed to sound like?

I spent a couple hours cleaning it off. It was covered in the usual oily dust so straight water out of a hose didnt touch it. Out came the Dawn dish soap. Worked like a charm. I cleaned the whole damn thing and discovered a few leaks along the way. The large ~3" manifold on top of the tank was leaking but some pipe dope will fix that up no problem.

The hard line between the compressor head and tank's compression fittings were leaking at both ends as well but snugging them down fixed that.

The biggest issue is the head/valve plate. It was hard to get a picture of but there were bubbles coming out between the head and cylinder jug. There were also bubbles around one of the head bolts. The flange on the pipe between the high and low pressure cylinders was also missing a bolt but surprisingly, that connection wasnt leaking.

How long should it take this compressor to fill up? The gasket kit is $160 but a whole new compressor head pump from Northern Tool is $300.

After cleaning, I am surprised at how clean this compressor is.

my neighbor had a DeVilibiss with a horiz. tank and a pimp that looked very much like yours, it was aluminum like yours. and it was LOUD> From 2 houses away, standing at the end of my driveway in front of my house, and this guy living 2 houses behind me, when both mine and his were running, I could hear his over mine! and yes his always sounded like it was knocking! My unit is a different brand, and a cast iron pump.

I guess nobody wants to answer the question.
My 7.5 HP 120 gal takes about 6 minutes to 145 if that helps a little. I suppose I'd expect yours to be about the same.More or less five minutes or so.It seems like a long time at first.

I paid $200 for it. It came from an RV dealership and the service manager just wanted it gone. I should have offered less... He has an identical one for sale but it was missing the pressure switch so I couldn't hear it run but I have thought of going back for it for parts. He'd probably take $50 for that one and I have a 5000 sq ft shop so storing it isn't really an issue.

Jump on it and plumb the tanks together.Save the other head for parts. Then you have a 160 gal 6.5 hp system.
Bad to the bone.

About 8 minutes from empty to full, but realize it is not a linear trend.

Uhm... the pump probably won't handle the duty cycle well and those 6.5hp motors are just like the 3hp 110v vacuum cleaner. That is probably more like a 4hp real motor.

I have two other 25 gallon single stage compressors and they both fill up to 120 PSI in 7 minutes or so

That looks like an ABAC/American IMC pump, possibly a B3800 (see EDIT below):

http://www.i90enter.com/b3800-b3801-pump-parts/

This same pump is used on the 2-stage Harbor Freight compressors that were sold for many years.

You could tear into it and see exactly what it needs - if it does have a worn rod bearing (causing the knocking sound), you're time and money ahead by getting a new pump. This is a consumer-grade pump that does the job, but doesn't have a long service life when compared to industrial duty compressors.

EDIT: after searching on that site a bit more, I don't think it is a 3800 - from the air filter and intercooler loop, I'm pretty sure that it's a B5900:
