When blasting you need volume, ive got a Craftsman 5hp unit cfm ? but i have a 60 gal tank.Ialso use a blasting cabnet, its only 2ftx3ft ,if i had a small tank id be where you are. When my compressor or motor dies i will put 2 tanks together, takes up room but if i use the preasurized sand blaster i need the volume............YG

Are the IR HP ratings for real or are they BS like a lot of other compressor companies? I went with an Eaton 2 stage 3 cylinder pump and a 7.5 HP Baldor motor when I rebuilt my air setup, I can blast all I want. I had a REAL 5hp two stage and it would not keep up with me blasting.

Yardgoat, depending on what dies and what you replace it with you don't need two tanks, I figured out the whole thing because I had an extra tank. My old compressor never caught up when I was blasting, it ran constantly, my new one kicks on, runs for a few minutes while I'm blasting and then kicks off for a while.

If you had a compressor that good you wouldnt need a tank at all. Would you ?For me to double my tanks just lets me use more air with out it comming on is all, when your out of air your out..Added volume just helps the compressor out some.If its a 24/7/365 day thing id get a big one also. They had a kit to take a 390 ford motor and make a compressor out of it,4cyl ran /4 cyl comp air.Sounds like a cool deal...............YG

I've got an IR 5 hp/18.1 cfm/80 gal tank. It runs both my small bead blast cabinet and my HF 90 lb pressurized sand blaster. The IR not only keeps up with the blaster but surpasses it. I'll be blasting and the compressor fires up, builds up air then shuts off. All the while, I haven't stopped blasting. The IR is a good choice.

Hi, is that a 2 stage compressor? I'm in the market for a compressor that'll keep up with a sandblaster. I will be doing mostly engine intake manifolds and the like. I'm looking at a couple 7.5 hp, 80 gal. 2 stage compressors, but would like any useful info people can give me from their experience. Thanks!

I just replaced an IR pump with an Eaton and it's head and shoulders above the IR in noise/heat/recovery time/ etc.

One other item not mentioned here that is very important in a unloader valve. Buying a compressor for blasting you want to make SURE the unit has one (or the option to install one). The unloader opens the valves in the pump heads after reaching cutoff pressure, and allows the pump to freewheel and the unit to keep running. This not only saves a ton of wear on the motor starting and stopping (electricity also) but allows the pump to cool off better from the air being pushed through the open valves.

Very important if you are going to do a lot of blasting.

here is a blasting tip for you
do not rely on the blaster to get off heavy layers or multiple layers of material or junk.
do not rely on it to get hevy rust off.

use paint stripper to get the easy layers off first
use a wire wheel to knock off scale
and a scraper to knock off layers of junk

the process will go faster and you will be less likly to warp and body panels
