so iv finally got round to building my compressor system and im after any input on my ideas, plans and parts collected so far, positive or otherwise, constructive or not i wana hear it, especialy if you have done something similar.

the aim is to assemble a system that:
-deliveres at least 25 true cfm (30 is the ultimate aim)
-a minimum of 250L, max 400L storage, this will have a ratio of somewhere between 1:2 and 1:3 wet/dry tanks.
-deliveres air clean and dry enough for sand/soda blasting.

I once priced a new system that would do this, it was over £4000, way over budget so i am building a system using parts that are cheap and easy to find.
I have a few parts i have collected and i think im ready to start building.

so far i have:
-3x 2.2kw (3hp) single phase motors
-2x single stage twin verticle cylinder pumps (3hp rated estimated to deliver 9cfm)
-1x two stage v twin pump (3hp rated estimated to deliver 10cfm)
-refrigerated air dryier (can handle upto 63cfm@230psi)

the tanks on both compressors are very suspect so i will need to find new tanks. anyone recomend a uk supplier?

anyone know about getting a tank tested in south of uk? i have a 270L tank but have no idea of its condition, it was previously used as a dry receiver so i hope its ok.

WHAT CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT THE IR TWIN V PUMP? (im getting lots of conflicting info)

i will add some plans of the system when my laptop stops crashing every time i open CAD.

If you get a chance to consult with The Home Depot, they'll say "let's do this", but won't leave it at that. "More saving, more doing"... What can I say? I got a compressor there and just plugged it in, so that's my input. ;)

The IR pump is a high quality, splash lube compressor with reed valves, or finger valves to be precise. Very long lived pump. Finger valves can break, or valve plates can score, but that's after many thousands of hours of use. Well worth fixing up if necessary. Dead simple construction and parts are usually cheap enough. That and the Brooks Crompton motor are the sturdiest parts of your setup.

The aluminum pump is an ABAC. Not particularly sturdy, but parts are readily available. Atlas Copco owns them now.

Can't give any advice on tank testing. I'm sure English regulations are pretty strict.

I'd be questioning the big red x on that Domnick Hunter dryer though. DH stuff is usually high quality.

thanks for your replies guys, good info on the ir pump much appreciated.

since starting this project i have been offered a twin 4hp system for a very good price so im thinking of just using that instead with the dh dryier, typical realy, iv waited years for a good used system to turn up and as soon as i start plan B one pops up.

oh, and the red x was put on by previous owner when they shut down business, it ment free for anyone to take if they wanted it before it was scrapped, was in daily use untill i got it and serviced reguarly etc.

thanks again guys for your input
