Compressor Buying Decision

Thinking about buying a used ingersoll rand 2475. Its got a 7.5HP 460 volt three phase motor on it. I don't have 3 phase but I do have a 5HP 1725 single phase motor sitting around. Would it be as simple as swapping that motor in and changing out the motor pulley to make it run on this compressor or is there more to it than I'm thinking?

Other than adding a jumper wire ( run jumper from L3 on the contactor to T2 on the overload relay) in the 3 phase mag starter and verifying pump RPM for the 5hp motor, you should be good to go.

The fact you are using a smaller motor might make this work. The wires in the controls need to be sized for the over current protection you gonna be using. Sometimes companies use same controls different voltage but should check. 460 3 pH use a 14 wire for 7.5 prolly,,, got to have 8 for 5 single. Might need 12 controls?

I ended up missing out on the deal. They wanted 400 seemed like an decent deal but not exactly a steal in my opinion considering I was not going to be able to see it run.

From my general experiences, Id say you did good, nobody needs a $400 door stop, or $400 project, when you likely will find something similar down the road, " working ".

I will pay next to nothing for a compressor that I cant hear or see run. I dont care if its a pressure lubed quincy,... or better. Ive got a Saylor Beale that is a wore out turd, that I did get to hear and see run, that I would have walked from if I really knew how bad it was, and it was damn near free ( 3ph ), but likely not worth the time and trouble of removing and bringing home.

Actually $400 would have been a good price if it was a runner. I paid $175 for mine not running and I knew it needed a flywheel. You could have either run a 5hp with the correct pulley, or sell the 3 phase and the 5 hp motors and use the cash to buy a single phase 7.5 Baldor or Williams ( British Baldor) for close to even money. I was able to easily get $200 on Craigslist for the used 5hp 3 phase motor on my 2475. Had to rewire the starter box for single phase, which was easy to do. Best thing about older IRs is that pump parts are easy to get and affordable. Keep trolling

Yeah I thought it was a fair deal not a once in a lifetime deal though. I don't really have to have anything right away so I will keep looking. I've been close on a few over the past year or so. Can you use a dual stage pump on a tank that came with a single stage or is there an issue with the pressure being to high?
