Compressor Choice Quincy or Curtis

I have been reading stuff on the internet for a while now. I figured out my choices down to 2 I think.

Curtis 5hp 60 gallon 17.8 cfm at 175
http://www.aircompressorsdirect.com/FS-Curtis-555VT6-Air-Compressor/p4460.html

Quincy 60 gallon 15.2 cfm at 175
http://www.aircompressorsdirect.com/Quincy-2V41C60VC-Air-Compressor/p855.html#reviews

The Curtis has a little more CFM for a couple bucks less. The Curtis pump is a little slower so I hope that it is quieter.

The Quincy says it has an aftercooler and is 100% duty cycle. I dont know the duty cycle of the Curtis.

The biggest air hog I am planning on using is a 10-15cfm Blast cabinet. From what I have been reading the 5hp 2 stage 60 gallon should do what I need it to.

Thanks for the Help

I'd go with the Quincy, but I'm sure either would serve you well. The after-cooler may be an advantage in keeping the air dry when blasting. Blasting with wet air can be a nightmare. I searched but couldn't see the after-cooler in any online pictures. It may just be fins on the tube between the second stage an the tank.

BTW I have a Quincy QT-5 I bought 20 years ago. I've never had an issue with it, but it was pretty loud until I got a silencer air cleaner. My original was a open element, but it looks like yours comes with the silencer type.

Where are you located? I found a local Quincy dealer that charged me for the compressor, FRL, hydraulic flex line, and startup kit for the same cost as just the compressor on ACD.com.

Just outside of Cincinnati. Do you have The same Quincy compressor? If so what are your thoughts on it

I have the QTV-54. Very quiet, and more than enough air than I can use at one time. Suprisingly, easy to move around the garage when I placed it (empty, of course). Just had to run a dedicated 30A breaker and add a plug to the garage wall. Simple enough.

I think you need to find the motor on the Curtis. It appears the Quincy has the high efficiency 5hp baldor without the magnetic starter. I think the larger 5hp regular Baldor is a bit more stout.

Doubt it comes with an aftercooler, (possible though, generally an added few hundred dollar option).
The Curtis and Quincy have an inter-cooler standard, not an after-cooler (option), which is relatively small (does not cool down the air to anywhere near ambient). It's function is not to drop water out but to cool the air somewhat between the first stage and second stage, aside from less thermal build up in the head area, cooler air entering the second stage gives greater efficiency (albeit small).

My Curtis compressor came with a Baldor motor. Noise level should be approx the same.

Both are excellent compressors but getting parts for a Quincy is easier, more competition as to part pricing.

Curtis said that the motor was a 28amp and said 50%-75% duty cycle. It does not come with a magnet starter. The 80 gallon one does come with the magnet starter.

So the Curtis has more cfm and more amps. The Quincy is 100% duty cycle.

It looks to me like the motors are the same on both, if neither have a magnetic starter. Sometimes their specs are a little off.

Seems like the consensus is the Quincy. Can't go wrong with either.

I have thrown Eaton into the mix right in my price range. Seems like the performance is similar to the Curtis. I like the constant run feature of the Eaton with the low pump rpm. Lots of friends of mine have Eatons and they have all got good reviews from them. I hate having Compressor OCD. I just want to buy one compressor and be happy for ever.

I bought my Quincy at Northern. After looking at different several brands sitting together in the store, it was obvious to me that the Quincy was a high quality piece. The Baldor motor was the kicker for me.....as the others had motors of questionable origin. After years of hard use, I've never regretted the purchase and I'm glad that I spent the extra money to get one I believe is one of the best.

Looks like alot of happy Quincy customers. I have been trying to get some information from Eaton. They dont seem to have a great handle on things there.

So for the 15 cfm blast cabinet I should not have a problem with any of these compressors?

I am leaning to go with the Quincy QTv-54 I have not found a single complaint about it. It fits my budget its compact it has a great reputation. I have heard people say that it is quiet also. I just know if it is not the Most powerfull 5hp Compresor.

I like that Blue color also.

Timido, Eaton's PR got nailed for using some parts from China but being assembled in the US.

Since they're assembled right outside of town, I'm leaning towards them, but both of the ones you listed have some decent numbers. A Quincy was on my short list.

ETA: are you the same "Timido" on SBZ?

Yup thats me. Kenny and my Friend Chris have the Eatons and they like them alot. I have a space in my garage I would like to put the compressor in the corner behind the entry door. I have 27" of Depth to work with. The Eaton 2 stage 60 has 2 different measurements for the width. One thing on the web site says 34"x30"x72" One the same page further down it says 34"x21"x72" The Eaton 2 stage 80 is 34 x 24 x 72. So the 80 gallon Fits and the 60 might fit??? They are going to get back to me. The Quincy fits the space better 29L x 21W x 64H

Powdercoat Kenny? He's done some work for me. ;)

Remember, you have to leave space around the compressor for air flow...

One of my compressors is an older 80gal. Curtis and it is the quietest compressor I've ever heard. I've never had any problems with it, either. On the other hand, my Kellogg-American is very loud, but so far, it's been trouble free since 1946.

I have owned the exact Quincy you have listed... it worked well, but at over 1200 rpm pump speed, is a bit noisy. I now own a 1957 model Curtis, and at 600 rpm pump speed, is the quietest compressor I have ever used. Since my compressor is inside the shop... noise is more important to me than a few cfm.

I have the Quincy that you are considering. I love but it is a bit louder that expected. If I were doing it again I would step up to the 80 Gal. size. It runs a bit slower and may not be so loud.
