Compressor choice

Hi, I found this site while researching a couple of IR compressors to replace my old sanborn. Help me choose. I use my garage for weekend motorcycle repair and projects. I do have a air powered tire machine and a bike lift and air tools. I would like to add a media blast cabinet at some point. Now to the question, I have decided between 2 IR compressors but cant get much info from IR.

1. 2340L5 60 gal 5hp 2 stage v pump
2. ts4n5 80 gal 5hp 2 stage inline pump
Both are on sale right now for $999, both different pumps are made in india.

Anyone have insight or experience with these? This maxes out the budget so quincy is out. Mike

With $1000 to spend, I'd be hunting on Craigslist or Kijiji (if you're in Canada) and see what you can find used. On Kijiji $1000 can get you some pretty nice Champion or Kellogg 5hp compressors without too much looking around.

Been checking craigslist lately only thing decent have been 3 phase that I cant use.

Here's a quote from another forum I think can help you here:

" If you need 175 PSI go with the two stage, but the single cuts out at 135 PSI and has, I think, 18.3 CFM at 90 PSI. It's higher than the 2 stage. It runs the plasma cutter and grinders and stuff very well. The compressors are both verticle inline cast iron twins. They have roller bearing crankshafts and all parts are available. Simple, old fashioned and well proven. Also, the verticle tank is a plus. I plumbed my condensate drain to a ball valve and out through the wall so there's no mess inside.

They were advertised at $899 but I asked the guy for 10% off and he said OK.

By far the best compressor I've ever had and a great deal for the money. They are a bit loud though. Mine's out in the pump house, but in the garage you might wake the family with those midnight projects.

Whatever compressor you get, don't be fooled by the phony HP ratings most carry! Look at the motor and if it says 5 horsepower, fine. If it says SPL, that means you are being lied to. Or just compare the CFM ratings at 90 PSI. Single stage puts out more than two stage in the practical pressure ranges."

So, whats the pros/cons of vee vs inline pump?

I wonder about it too. If like engines the inline is longer lasting.

There really isn't a preference either way except for size consideration. The V pumps take up more space but otherwise the performance and longevity is about the same. Which is to say they are both reed valve machines made in India and the quality control isn't that hot. They are fine for a home shop probably but the chances of there being a manufacturing defect in them is a lot higher. They will run a lot hotter than say a Quincy QR - not enough cast iron in them to dissipate the heat like the old American designs. Splash lubed which isn't the greatest. It's an "intermittent" duty machine - not designed to run constantly for long periods. If it had to run 24/7 it would probably last a month or less. A Quincy QR for example could run continuously for decades given proper oil/filter maintenance and good airflow.
