compressor control wiring

So I'm a little confused. I wiring my compressor 240 volt coil and pressure switch and on/off pushbutton switch with three terminals. It was a common in the middle so I'm unsure how wire the switch. It just isn't clicking for me in my mind can somebody help me with a diagram of what I need to do to get it work. Thanks Chris

Yeah I realize that. Just want to make sure the on/off is going to work and open and close the contactor as needed. I'm having a hard time thinking of how to do it.

Do I understand that you are using some sort of push button switch that is push on, push off, but has three terminals, the common terminal in the middle, a normally closed terminal on one end, and normally open on the other?

All you are trying to do is interrupt the circuit going either to or from the pressure switch

Yes sir that is correct Charles. Can you help me here I'm not coming up blank in my mind on how it needs to done to achieve proper results.

Pick one of the wires going to the pressure switch, just one of them, and cut it, install the switch in this wire. Connect one wire to the middle terminal, one wire to one of the other terminals. Third terminal will be unused.

Personally, I would not want a push on, push off switch on the compressor, I want one, like a light switch, that I can tell if it is on or off. Make sure the switch is rated for AC current and the necessary voltage.

Good point about the push buttons but that is what I already have. Thanks that common was throwing me off. I guess I was over thinking it I had it in my mind I needed to feed it from the common for some reason. Just to make sure there is no need for auxillary set of contacts that are latching then. It will shut off when I push the off and stay off ?

The assumption is you have a maintained contact on your Buttons and not momentary

Get rid of them, use the pressure switch to control the contactor,(2-wire control) if you use the Start/Stop buttons (3-wire control) it will have to be manually started every time, which means the air supply will not be constant because the compressor will not refill on it's own.



3-wire control is great for machinery like saws, grinders, lathes, & such, on a air compressor it's about as useful as a screen door on a submarine.

Ah that ***** I was really wanting to be able to turn the compressor on and off at night. Maybe I just need to get a HOA and stick to what I know.

This is a 60 amp switch that will work in your application. If you need 30a then ms302 is the switch.

Wire a toggle switch into the control circuit, it does not need to be rated for the motor since it's only controlling the coil. Note: this method is way cheaper then a HOA selector switch.

Yep that is the plan now just need a constant set of contacts so the pressure switch will control it when on and have an off when needed.

They are momentary contacts not maintained.

No, that won't work. Use a simple wall light switch (snap switch), don't get any simpler than that. If you interrupt the wire to or from the pressure switch, the pressure switch cannot power the coil of the magnetic starter and the compressor will not run.
