i have a Husky(made by Campbell Hausefeld) 7.5hp 80 gal compressor. i just picked it up today(used) and when i got it back to the shop, i realized that the the part of the crankshaft that sticks out of the pump housing(where the pulley mounts to it) is bent! its not really that bad but the runout on the pulley is about .5" i looked it up on eraplacementparts and its $226 plus it take 1-2 weeks before it even ships... the only reason i am semi-calm about this is bc i only paid $400 for it.... so,

the question:

1) can i just run it like it is?(i am considering, just giving it a shot; once i get power to it)

2) If i disassemble the pump and take the crankshaft to a machine shop, can they straighten it?

3) is ereplacementparts the cheapest place to get compressor parts?

this would be the compressor i have:

thanks guys!

Brandon,
You need to find a shop that specializes in crankshaft repair. You dont have your location in your profile, but if you post where you live, I might be able to find a shop for you.

Sometimes it is impossible to get a bent crankshaft perfectly straight without having to regrind the main bearings. Most compressor cranks run on roller bearings so this is not an option. Guess what I am saying is dont be real surprised if the crank shop tells you it cannot be fixed :(

Also, you might want to look in the Northern catalog or web site, you might be able to get a complete new pump for not much more than what the crank will cost.

Are you talking about the pulley/flywheel/fan is moving side to side 1/2"?

If so it might be the wheel is bent and not the crank. If that is the case, you have 2 options: replace the Wheel or try to straighten it. It's probably cast iron, but IMO you have little to lose...

Get something to indicate with (as in Pointer) near the center of the crank and see where you are...

We have trued up many crank shafts over the years using a 2 x 4 and a small sledge hammer. We just eyeball the shaft or use a dial caliper to check the run out. The last one we did was a '76 arctic cat snomobile. The thing is still running. We figured that if we got one season out of it we were doing good. Those motors can spin at excess of 7k rpms.

An air compressor shaft that spins at 450 rpm should be trueable with little trouble. Of course you need to remove the head and piston. so you can get the 2 x 4 down the jug. Whack the 2 x 4 carefully to drive the bend in the crank the direction you want.

Like you said, try fixing it yourself and save some money. If this doesn't work then take it to the pros. With that big pulley it should be really easy to see if you are taking the bend out of it.
