Compressor fill problems - how long?

Bought a second hand Husky C602H 60 gallon single stage compressor, the seller lied to me and told me it worked great.

Upon first hooking it up, it wouldnt fill above 40 lbs, and there was a ton of hot air coming out of the head. Took it apart and replaced the head and valve gaskets. Now, running for the 2nd time after replacing gaskets it took about 25 minutes to fill to 85 PSI, after that I called it quits and here I am.

How long, on average, should a single stage 60 gallon take to fill?

What else might be wrong here? I tried giving it the old soapy water bubble test while running to check for leaks, but the pump got up to about 290 degrees and it is just boiling off.

Ideas?

Something is way wrong.

I think that compressor is similar to mine, and actually made by Cambell Hausfield.

It should fill from 0 to shutoff (135 PSI for mine) in around 5 minutes or less.

First, confirm that your pressure gauge is correct. Odds are it is, but I've chased more than one problem when the gauge or meter is wrong.

Gauge is fine, pressure regulator reads same thing.

Tested all fittings for leaks, but just have it filling the compressor, everything else is valved off.

If I so.have to replace this pump, is there anything "better" i.can replace it with for a few more bucks. Look like a stock replacement is about 250

Just rebuild the pump. I just did mine. It is really easy. Go to their websight. Download the parts list. If its not listed call them and they will email it to you.

Repair kit runs about 160, rather just spend the extra 100 bucks and not deal with the agrovation

Did you verify the valves? I fixed a compressor that had symptoms similar to what you described. It was a broken and this semi functional valve.

Hmmm.... bad check valve would cause leak down after pump shuts down, right? That doesn't seem to be the problem . Someone mentioned checking for air leak at the oil filler tube, i.e. crankcase vent ...good to check this for blow by the rings.


Is this a pump that is worth rebuilding?
You can go down the rabbit hole pretty fast replacing part by part till it works.

checked all gaps where gaskets would be, fittings, etc.

I wound up getting it to about 100 PSI, let it sit for a few hours and it's still at 100 PSI.

I'm with you there on chasing problems on a cheapy compressor and spending a ton of money, 190 bucks with shipping ordered me a new pump and a quart of oil.

I'll probably wind up taking the pump apart once I take it off the tank just to learn more about it and dig into it though.

Find number for Eaton compressor and call them and ask questions.
I did this and just bought a new pump from them have been very happy.......

I got lucky on mine. I took it apart and cleaned it up installed 2 new gauges and re filled with new oil. Works like a champ.

If it is that bad i would get a new one as well. My brother got the Husky 20 gallon oi less 175 PSI and loves it.

You clearly aren't building pressure. That means either the rings, head basket or valves are leaking. It's unlikely you have a tank or plumbing leak that would cause that as a non - pump leak would be seen after the pump is stopped. Also it would take big leak to keep the tank pressure at just 100 after 20+ min (I'm assuming it should take less than 10 to fill from zero with no load). I bet you have a bad valve in the head. Take the belt off, soon it by hand and see if air comes out the intake.

While there may be something wrong I can tell you I have that compressor exactly and it takes a looong time to get up to 90psi. It seriously can't keep up with even a 3 inch cut off tool. Only 11.5 cfm at 90psi. I'll go out in awhile and time it to give you a benchmark but i'm thinking its 15 min from zero to fill the tank.

I turned off all my piping so just the compressor 60gal fills to 90psi in 6:40 and to shutoff at 130or so for another 5 Min for a total of about 11:40
Not as bad as I thought to 90. My piping adds some to the time I guess. feels a hell of a lot longer waiting for it.
If you put a bigger pump on yours post it up as I've been thinking of it for this one.

Thanks for the bench mark, i went with the stock pump I linked above, I didnt want to spend a ton of money on it right now as I'm not sure what my direct needs are besides ' basic ' things at the moment.

No leaks, will build some air but not quickly, sounds like bad valves or compression rings. Only building air on one stroke instead of two. Working against itself.

just an update , in case anybody refers to this in the future.

the new compressor i linked in this thread was a direct replacement, cost was about 160 plus shipping.

popped it on, filled with oil, 30 minute break in period.

fills from 0-155 in about 6 minutes.
