Compressor Grit?

new one (for me at least)

after draining water from compressor tank (80g/5hp unit) and the air starts blowing out, i am getting a black colored grit (not quite like sand, but kinda)

anybody else get that? - is it from some kind of corrosion inside the tank? - can't imagine it is getting created from the compressor motor itself? - these are not metal particles like internals on the motor getting chewed up - has been happening for many months

any clues?

thanks!

I thought I remembered reading something similar not too long ago one here. How much of this grit is coming out? Is it possible the corrosion is being compressed so much from all the pressure it breaks down to its smallest form - that grit?

I bet older Sears units and similar models that did not have air filters were much more susceptible to this.

Oh absolutely. I can just picture someone sanding a body panel with a da in a small garage and the compressor sucking all that dust in.
