I have a 60 gallon, 6hp craftsman compressor. I just put a new on/off switch on it and when I run the air pressure down sometimes it doesnt turn on when on auto and sometimes it does. Sometimes i will run the air pressure down and then like 5 minutes later it will finally kick on. Any ideas?

I forgot to mention that the switch does make contact and turn on when the pressure gets low and the motor is getting the correct voltage. Is there possibly a thermal protection in the motor when it gets too hot it wont turn on or something?

Yes, there's probably internal themal protection if it's a single phase motor.
The internal themal overload will be in series in between the line voltage and motor windings. This is common for 115v motors. It's basically another switch that needs to be closed to operate.

A picture of the pump head would be worth 1000 words.
If the cowling is missing, airflow over the pistons wouldn't be sufficient to cool them.

How old is this compressor? Is there dust in the motor?

I'd start by using a blow gun with the compressor to blow out any dust from the pump and the motor.
