Compressor help needed!

Want to buy a compressor for my home garage. Looking to get a 30-33 gal to run basic tools for a do it yourself kind of guy. Have about $500 to spend. Please give me your ideas. Most of the reviews I read don't help because no one but the guys with problems right them!

Well, you have to determine what your "basic tools" consume as far as cfm. Trust me, the small grinders, sanders, etc. Eat a ton of compressed air. You don't say what basic tools are, but that is where you want to start. I also think you meant "write them" rather than "right them".

Well you are right(correct) I should have used write(type,print) at any rate....

Basic for me would mean air ratchet, impact, grinder,air hammer, etc.

I wouldn't get an oil-less...They are too noisy

I picked up the 60 gallon husky for 438 after a 10% off and its great. Still need to buy your hookup and regulator and all that though.

Wonder if it would help to put it in a cabinet or if it would be too hot (note my location!)...

Puma makes a few good ones in this price range.

as does CastAir.. but at a certain point they are all about the same.

If you have $500 to spend, I'd recommend that you bide your time and wait for a decent used two-stage, American made compressor to come along. They come up on craigslist all the time....Whatever you do, don't get an oil-less (scroll type compressor)...you will regret it...

So much hate for the oilless models, I've had my Craftsman Pro 25 gallon 2 stage oilless for at least five years and its been awesome. It's actually pretty quiet, I can have a conversation while standing right next to it while its filling.
I've ran die grinders, impact wrenches and ratchets all without a problem. I even removed four tires off my suv with 6 lugs each without the compressor kicking on once.
This model has been replaced with a newer oiled version though.
Just wanted to prevent too much false info about oilless compressors from being spread around, not ALL of them are loud.

cfaas416 i have that same compressor at my work shop had it at home tell i got a bigger one. I have it hooked to a 80 gallon tank also. use to have it hooked on 2 tanks. You will get a lot of use out of it. Ive had mine for over 8 years and it see's 3+ hours of use a day most times. there have been days where i have used it all day long so it has lots of hours on it. So ya i would say RascalRider go for the husky

Just a thought on used compressors here, I know a lot of people who don't maintain their compressor so waiting for a used one might end in disaster... especially in the trapped water, rusted out tank arena.

Buy the biggest compressor you can afford, if you have the space. After a while you will want more and more air for more tools, gadgets, etc...
I began with 5 gallons, then 20 gallons and now I am in 60 gallons.
