I found this deal on Craigslist:

80 gallon Dayton tank
Century 5hp Motor (3450rpm) 220V
Atlas-Copco Pump (2 stage) 175psi - 22cfm @ 125psi

The guy says he put it together himself and used it in his shop.

This is listed for $500

What are your thoughts on the components?

**Please don't compare it to a Campbell Hausfield or a Craftsman. I am specifically looking for an older USA made compressor.

Thanks!
James

Just like engines, AR-15s, and nameless other things, "put it together himself" could mean it was carefully assembled and aligned with fanatical care, or it could mean it's a godawful mongrel made out of scrap parts.

I can tell you, most 5hp motors that I've seen turning two stage pumps are 1725 rpm, not 3450.

I understand. Good advice...

I was thinking the RPMs on it were a bit high, though I am not sure whether it is single stage or two stage.

Any other thoughts?

And my Champion has a 1725 rpm.

You said in your post that it was two stage... And if it's making 175 psi, it's two stage.

It all depends on how the ratio is set up and how fast the pump is turning. Faster = more heat and shorter lifespan. All the brand names on the individual components are decent, but I've seen some real Frankensteins that people have put together...

Sorry, I did say 2 stage. That is correct.

The compressor looks like a normal upright compressor, nothing crazy or cobbled...

Hard to tell from that pic for sure, but that doesn't look like a two stage pump to me... looks like a two-cylinder single stage. Someone else may know Atlas-Copcos better than I do.

Dayton/Speedaire also has a 3450rom.

A friend had one.
The compr sounded like it was speeding its *** off.... but it ran hard for years w/o slinging anything from the crank case across the parking lot....

I've seen a pump like that before. If I recall correctly, it is all aluminum with reed style valves. I'd look into parts availability for the pump and check the data plate on the electric motor.
