I have an Ingersoll Rand t30 compressor i got from my work. The electic motor on it has failed. I'm wondering if its worth it to convert it to singe phase 240v and use it in my garage or if i should sell the parts to offset the cost of a different compressor. Does anyone have a good source of information on what would be needed? I've been doing alot of searching and i'm having hard time finding the info. Its an 80 gallon standup model with a 242-5n pump.

There isn't anything special about that motor. You need to give the motor data to a local motor shop and get the single-phase version, if you can. You'll also need a magnetic motor starter.

The 242 is a good machine and will last for years in a home environment.

Its a big bonus too because i got it for free. The owner said if i didn't want it to punch a hole in the tank and put it outside for the scrap guys. I'll try looking up some local motor shops.

Easier said than done. I had a tank given to me a while back. During inspection I found that the bottom had rusted through. I tried to take it to a local scrap location and they wouldn't accept it until they could see inside it. I ended up getting the Sawzall after the domed top. I couldn't get the drill to go through the side (I thought the bit was sharp but.... the wall was thick).

Make a call to the local electric motor shop. They should have a suggestion or two for you.

Do you have the old motor? If so it would have a frame size on it and that will give you all you need to know for a bolt on replacement. You also have to match the speed or adjust the pulley ratio. The horsepower will also have to be the same or an adjustment made in the speed you drive the pump if the HP is lower than the original motor.

Look at this thread, http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=139111&highlight=compressor , it has some links to IR. Steevo also did another thread on the rebuild of the compressor linked above

Just the t30 pump is worth some money. I'd call a local motor shop cause they probably got a 220v single phase laying around. You can buy a new pulley if the shaft size is different. Make sure to align the pulleys. Later
