So I'm looking to buy a new USA 2 stage single phase 80 air compressor how ever I don't know whether or not to go with 5hp or 7.5hp. I do plan on getting a sandblast cabinet that will not get a ton of use.
What brand is going to be the most quiet and should I opt for the after cooler?
Looking at Quincy,Champion,and Saylor Beall.

What electric service do you have? 5 is a little light for blasting but the standard for body work. It will run the tools steady. It will work for limited blasting.

They are all noisy unless you put a muffler on the input side.
The factory filters are for dirt, not noise.

All three of those brands are good quality. I would see what dealers are local in your area and see how they treat you.

I roughed in a 40amp circuit for the compressor when I did the wiring which should cover even 7.5hp units.
The unit I really like but it's a bit higher than I can spend it the Champion Vr7-8 with the 4 cylinder dropped to 545rpm I think that would be about as quiet as you can get.
I don't know of any good dealers close to me I can go too so it will be a online buy.

In the past I did a medium amount of blast cabinet work with a 5hp T30 compressor.

I put that thing thru a workout and it survived.

I could actually blast continuously and the 5hp compressor would recover and just kick off for a few seconds before restarting but I felt like that was abusive [possibly to my wallet thru the power company bill!!] to basically have it running almost constantly.

I haven't blasted in quite awhile and so the 5hp is plenty now. Typically 7.5s come with 80 gal tanks and that is also a larger eater of space plus heavier to move around. I've been able to move my T30 a few times without too much trouble on a refrigerator truck, I believe I'd have to recruit a friend or employ a forklift/pallet jack to move an 80gal/7.5

I'm a fan of Quincy but all of those brands are good.

All those 80gal unions are heavy 550-700lbs from what I seen and I don't plan to move it once in place. I laid out a nice corner when I set the garage up thats where it will stay!
What are some good online companies too look at?

I have a Bendpak one that I bought off here when they offered a pretty fair deal. Only 5 HP but works well and is pretty quiet. Quite well made. Overkill for my needs. It sits in the corner of my shop and is pretty happy there.

Find a supplier that deals with automotive repair shops. They may discount more than a purely industrial supplier.

I've looked at 'Air Compressors Direct' a few times, they have a nice website and fair prices, but I haven't bought anything from them nor have I read any reviews. I'm sure it's all drop-shipped. But it would probably be better to go to the manufacturer's website and usually they have a link for dealers / places to buy. Heck, might even be able to call them direct and get a good deal.

I know Lowe's sells a couple Quincy models on their website... Don't know how price would compare with other places if you are able to slap some coupons on and pick it up at the store to save on shipping.
