I just took delivery of a Champion 80 gal 5 horse twin stage upright and need to position it against a wall in a corner of my garage. Anybody got an idea how to pick it off of its crate floor and place it elsewhere?

Thanks.

Zrexxer,

That looks like my compressor. Great idea. D ring and an engine hoist.

Cool.

I got the forged D-ring at Harbor Freight for about $5. Just drilled two 3/8" holes in the compressor and mounted it more or less centered. As you can see, that wasn't exactly the center of gravity but it kept the compressor vertical enough to be able to handle easily. I got mine off the trailer single-handedly with this method.

If you can stomach it you are best to leave it on the pallet. Gives you more room underneath to drain it and isolates it from the floor.

We have many shops and most of our compressors are sitting on the original pallet.

Besides that, you will want a couple of buddies to move a complete 80 gal. My wife and unloaded my 80 gal (one upright, one horizontal) tanks off the truck and then just pushed them around on the concrete but with the pump and motor it will be top heavy and pretty damn heavy in general.

I used numerous 2x's of diff widths and stepped mine off the pallet with a buddy and just walked it into position, if doing by yourself without a hoist, take the motor and compressor off and it's very managable

Zerrexer, You have a lot more faith in Harbor Freight hardware than I do!
Ehh, it's a solid forged steel ring 1/2" in diameter and a single piece of 3/16" steel plate... didn't take too much engineering to figure out a 550 lb compressor wasn't going to overcome it.

I basicially did what Zrexxer did except I bought a lifting strap (mine is a 3 cylinder, so no good place to mount the lift eye). The strap is about 8 foot long, with eyes on each end. Weave it under the compressor/motor mounting plate, and then insert one eye thru the other like a choker and hoist away with the cherry picker. Got the strap at tractor supply, I think the load rating was like 2x or 3x the compressor weight.
