looking at a used compressor. price low, but it's pretty much a "pig in a poke" deal. saylor beall 707 pump (two stage "V-4" config) on a big tank, but it entirely LACKS: flywheel, motor, and pressure switch...

clamped my huge honkin' curvejaw vicegrips onto the crank stub (where the flywheel would be). attempted to turn the crankshaft. wasn't sure which direction it was -supposed- to turn (could figure it out from a flywheel image, but lacked that info at the time). I was only able to turn the crankshaft maybe 30 to 40 degrees of rotation total, it "stopped hard" (in both directions) at about 10 o'clock and midnight. wiggling it clockwise and c'cw in very short amounts resulted in no untoward noises...(was listening for a 'rod knock' type noise)

thinking it -must've- 'dropped a rod cap' (or at least busted off one side of a rod cap) but what ELSE COULD it be? is there any way something else could 'dislodge' and cause this symptom? I'm -guessing- 'not'...

or maybe the crankshaft -itself- is busted off "sheared" inside there? or?

*thanks* for all info and ideas on this guys

ps-realize I 'could' remove either crankcase side cover (to confirm my guess) but...seller will not allow

There's something seriously wrong with that pump. I wouldn't touch it with a 10' stick. The fact that the seller will not allow you to remove the side cover is somewhat telling. Most any seller of an inoperative machine will allow you to at least look at the internals upon request.

I'm sure that's right (but still hope "maybe something simple" could cause the symptom, something I may've overlooked...)...

actually, the guy 'in charge' of the sale/sellprice negotiation is an 'agent' for the corporate/owner. my experience, so far, is they're lookin' to get as much as the mkt will bear for their stuff. actually, if I was to open the case and the rod 'proves thrown' I'm pretty sure it wouldn't change their asking/sell price anyway...

as it stands now, the asking price ("pretty firm") is in the exceptionally low (barely) three figures. however, with time (& if nobody acts before me) the price 'could' drop to mid-two figures...maybe making it worth the gamble..."or so I hopes" anyway

*thanks* A_P

I bet the crank is broke, there was another guy on here that bought one at the time I worked for a SB dist. and help him get the parts. I wouldn't buy it if it were me no matter how cheap it is

I bought a used Craftsman, 60 gal. for $150. couldn't hear it run so I had to assume that the pump or motor was bad, turned out it was only the presure switch.
Price out what a new pump will cost and figure with that and anything else ya gotta replace, whats 1/2 of new cost and price it at that.

No meaning them any disrespect but with so much missing and likely bad parts that are there, I would consider it as scrap metal minus the haul away +$20 for their beer fund or buy the tank as storage if they can show it can pass a hydro. Unless you have another of that model or a bone yard of compressors to rob the missing pieces from, by the time you get done you will have more in it than compressor than a new USA made one would cost.

and I have one that ran which I paid about the same on and it turned out to have motor problems so by the time I get done fixing it .... It is a **** shoot sometimes. :)
