Can someone shed some light with regards to NEC & stationary garage equipment? Do service disconnects need to be installed or is there a certain rule if within "x" amount of feet or in visibility of the panel?

The economy was poopy and I had mine installed, the guy was fussy about seeing the plug and cord installed. I since removed it, there is a handi box and I didn't have a switch but no one looses sleep over it as the panel is within 20 ft. If this is your own garage and its local I wouldn't worry much but I havnt had enough coffee yet to consider the code.
We can install an air comp in this fashion, hoist should be the same way.

I've seen the results of a lift switch welding itself closed. You want a cutoff that's quick and easy - the lift could be crushing your car going or a person.

A "service disconnect" disconnects the service entrance conductors which the conductors to equipment used in shops in this forum are not, but to answer the question, some sort of disconnect is required & prudent, but one adjacent to the equipment is always best as makes it easy to shut off the equipment for servicing it.

Code requires a disconnect (a service disconnect is something different) IF further than 50' from and not within sight of the panel.

Will the equipment be hard wired or use plug and receptacle?

I ran wire to a L6-30R receptacles in the ceiling for the lifts and L6-20R receptacle in the wall for the compressor. The lifts have short pig-tails which I was going to add an L6-30R/P and make a 10/2 SO/SJ extension cord to the plugs in the ceilings.

I have 2 whips, pone for plugging in light or tool under car and one on a bracket that rides up with the car.
