Compressor motor question

Ok so heres what I got, I have an IR 80 gallon 5 HP compressor, It is Model # SS5N5 with an Emerson motor #54421193 If you google you will see the problems with this machine and the motors on them. Well I replaced the Emerson motor a while back because it quit working and the fear of fire from it concerned me. I replaced it with another 5Hp motor (Marathon) but that recently quit working on me too. So I sent both to a guy that fixes electric motors, yesterday I got both back fixed $60.00 and he said that the switches inside the Marathon were replaced and that the breaker inside the Emerson was overloaded. he replaced all necessary items and tested them and said both were good.


Now the question is...which one would you put back on, the orginal or the replacement???

I would be going fir the original as its more reliable then the replacement one because, no one will be able to provide you the gurantee weather the replaced compressor would work fine without causing problem with in years to come.....

Knowing that the emersons actually create flames, I'd put the marathon on first.

I have/had the same compressor. My motor blew a capacitor during the first use. Unfortunately it had sat in my garage un-powered for a year and was out of warranty by 15 days. IR refused to replace the motor or capacitor. It's now a pile of **** sitting in the corner. They tried to tell me I must have been running it for a long time at a low voltage which is B.S. seeing as how my meter shows the voltage on the circuit is fine under load and given the fact that I was following IR's break in procedure and the motor had only been run 30 minutes with the tank's valve wide open per their instructions.

After their customer service rep was nasty with me on the phone I remembered that I bought their maintenance kit which is supposed to extend the warranty for two years. I called back the customer service department and was told that even though it's not stated anywhere in the documentation, the extended warranty only covers the compressor head, not the tank or motor

Given my trouble with the motor, I would not put another Emerson motor on it. Nor will I ever buy another IR product again after how rude their customer service rep was.

Darryl, something is wrong. If I had 2 motors fail, I would examine the power supply. An electrician can tell you more about the requirements for 5HP, but voltage drop can be an issue. Cheaper motors are less efficient as well, so the power delivered is only going to be used at 50 to 60 %. I guess that means you better get a lot of power capacity to the motor so it can waste it by converting a bunch of it to heat.

Any real electricians?

My thoughts too.

Darryl, something is wrong. If I had 2 motors fail, I would examine the power supply. An electrician can tell you more about the requirements for 5HP, but voltage drop can be an issue. Cheaper motors are less efficient as well, so the power delivered is only going to be used at 50 to 60 %. Guess I'm not sure on the power supply, an electrician set up the shop and did the final hook up.


I have the compressor in a 8X10 room thats insulated, it does get warm in there if it's been running for awhile, should I put in some type of ventalation in the room for when it running like maybe an attic fan that I could turn on when it running.
