Compressor muffler..

Ok, so I'm gearing up to move into my new 24x24 and I'm looking at hushing my Kobalt down a bit.

Well I went and checked out the intake to see how best to rig up a muffler.

Looks like it's going to take some ingenuity.

Anyone have any suggestions?

I don't know how handy you are but you're going to have to fab an adapter to convert the existing opening to 1/2" female pipe. Then google " Atomuffler". These are not the best air filter but they are better than what you have there and the quiet the intake considerably.

Looks lie those 2 black lugs will screw right out and leave a threaded female opening.

Yeh, I thought about pulling those..

I wonder if adding mufflers to that would do enough to silence the intake ports directly do the right of the lugs?

what are you guys looking at unscrewing? those 2 black allen things are headbolts
the oval things above them are the intake openings, you are looking at the top of the reed valves.

you will need to make a sheeetmetal cover that will look like the thing that holds the filter and then attach/weld a pipe or something like that to it to make a remote air intake

I think you may be better off building an enclusure for the whole air compressor

From the photos,it looks like there is a metal cover with a lip, that fits on top, and holds the flat, rectangular air filter in place.

Get a piece of metal sheet that is the same size as the air filter, and replace the filter with the sheet. Drill a hole in the metal sheet, and put in a 3/4"pipe, with a nut n each side to hold it in place.(use the nuts made for electrical conduit; they are much thinner than plumbing nuts).

Then attach your choice of mufflers to the 3/4"pipe.

If we use a muffler with a 3/4" inlet, that equates to ~ 0.44 Sq Inches. Is that going to work?? Inquiring minds need to know???

I'd be leary of cutting my intake that much - seems it might starve your compressor. I'd build a "box" over the filter area with a bigger opening at the bottom. Even a "panel" in front of the air intake, with some soft foam - any thing to break up the sound waves/pulsations will help. A 3" ****** on the intake of my old compressor's intake changed the noise and pitch enough to be more comfortable.

Measure the inlet holes in the two black things on the bottom of the filter housing. You will want the inside area of the pipe inlet to at least equal that total area.

As far as the filter itself, the working surface area should be 3.75 sq. inches or greater.

I used a filter from an industrial compressor (don't remember the brand, as it was 40+ years ago) on my Sears (Speedaire) 3hp single stage compressor to replace the felt pad "filter" that came on it. I used a block of aluminum drilled and tapped for the pipe thread of the filter unit, and attached it to the compressor head using the original mounting screws and a form-a-gasket that had adhesive properties. It's still working fine!

Small gas engines move as much air as a homeowner compressor. Any filter that has an inside diameter of at least two inches and a height of an inch will pass far more air than you will ever need.

I measured the actual opening for the reed valves this morning as ~ .56 x .75 which equates to .42 Sq inches x 2 = .84". So if I use a filter with a 1" inlet everything will be fine!

I had the same issue with my compressor. Like Provincial posted, I cut a piece of metal and threaded a drilled hole to accomodate a 1/2MPT air filter. I also used high temp silicone to seal up the top plate. It'll be a week before I can get a picture.

IIRC, there's not enough space for a 3/4MPT air filter.
