I set out to order some fresh compressor oil tonight and it comes in a variety of wieghts. So,does anyone know what the IR type 30,and the Champion R-15 would use? Idont remember what I last used in the IR because it was 35 yrs ago when I changed it last.

When I needed some parts for my new used Quincy compressor, I ended up going to three different industrial compressor places in the metro Detroit area. They all told me the same thing. Old fashioned straight 30w non-detergent oil. I have since read it in a few different on line sources as well. Since you can pick it up for $2-$3 a quart, You can change the oil frequently and it should be no big deal.

Champion and Quincy both sell their own compressor oil. Synthetic I believe. Around $5.00 a quart. Sure its a couple bucks more than 30w non detergent, but you don't need much, and you will know you've got the best stuff.

After working in my father-in-laws compressor biz for 10 years, (20 years ago :( ) we always used 30w non-detergent.

With that being said, our temps don't have the vast change that some parts of the country have, not to mention great strides in technology in lubricants.

In my opinion, splash lubricated pumps should always use 30w non-detergent. I have never seen any mechanical benefit to using anything but. Pressure fed pumps might see advantages, but I would have to see the insides after several years of use to completely agree with its use.

After all, some of the most desired compressors are older, and have been running on the old fashioned stuff since day one.Doesn't it all come back to proper care..(regular maintenance)..anyway?

I use Mobil Rarus 427 compressor oil, as it was highly recommended. I bought it from ENCO, before that, the compressor had 30wt, non-detergent, NAPA motor oil.

my eaton service manual recommends "Mobil RARUS 427 or nay non-detergent 30 weight compressor oil. Under no circumstances should you use automotive type oil." But it doesn't say what the difference is or why.
