What replacement oil do you guys use for compressor, i just fixed seized compressor and notice that the compressor oil you get from the store is too thick for the oil to penetrate the crankshaft bushing that cause the seizing because oil did not penetrate the bushing, previous oil in that compressor is like a 10w-30 motor oil, would a 5w-20 work

I use the Ingersoll Rand all season synthetic oils. I have used Amsoil synthetic in the past.

5-w-20 will be thinner than 10-w-30 at room temperature. It will also be thinner at high temperature. They are not interchangeable and if you already have a viscocity problems this might make it worse. If you want a thinner oil at cold temps, go ahead but I would stick to the 30 at the top. You could even go to 0-W-30.

Compressor oil is a ND oil and is now often specified in ISO units not SAE. I dont know why. But it often is. ISO 68 is equivalent to SAE 30 and ISO 46 is equivalent to SAE 20. You can easily find conversion charts. I would see if you can find what you machine is spec'ed for.....Also the temperatures it will be used in is a main consideration. I would use a synthetic as it gives you more temperature flexibility and better protection.

My Craftsman compressor from sears came with SAE 30 ND. In colder temps....< 40 F. It would struggle to start and if real cold it would not start at all . About 2 years ago I bought a bottle of Huskey ISO 46 synthetic compressor oil at Home Depot. It works so much better in all temperature ranges with it. From 20 to 90 F. I was concerned it may consume more oil in the hot weather but it has not. I have not had to add any to it in 2 years. I don't use it every week but certainly a few times a month. It seems like a cheap and good change. Good Luck!

These tags were present on almost all of the older cast iron industrial DeVilbiss compressors I worked on. They specified pretty light oils, and these were hard running machines built for heavy use. I would stay away from all mutigrade motor oils since they are bad news for the valves. If you needed to use something off the shelf I'd use the lightest synthetic oil I could get my hands on.

I have used their compressor oil for a long time and it works good. I have been using the synthetic type. I know the prices are high on the web site but not from other sellers on line.

Mine was under water for 3 days in a flood in 2004. I asked the manufacturer what to use when it dried out and was told to use Mobil 1 10W40.

Best price I found recently on synthetic compressor oil was the Flexilla brand at napa. Be sure to use a coupon code
