Compressor on wheels

Has anybody put there large vertical (60,80,120 gallon) compressor on wheels of some sort? I am having a hard time bringing myself to putting the compressor on the floor because I know once it is there I will not be able to move it as it weighs 600lbs.

I am thinking of making a metal frame to bolt the compressor to with some rubber pads and then attaching casters with wheel locks to the frame.

Sounds like a good idea to me. I have a 60 gal that I frequently move by "walking" it across the floor. Wheels would seem to make it much easier. Keep us posted on your choice.

I guess i dont understand the idea of moving around a large 60-120 gallon shop compressor.........?...........?

Why not just pipe you lines and/or/also run a retractable hose reel / line.
With the hose reel you can go anywhere you need in the shop per how long your line hose is.

The power on the bigger compressors is normally hard wired in so you would have to run an outlet to unplug or have a long extention.

If i just had to move a compressor for whatever reason a lot then i would think about a gas powered compressor with the same CFM but at a smaller tank.

If you put a roller stand or whatever under the compressor then you will need a wide ------------------- foot print to support the top heavy unit. ( vertical units )

 So why move the compressor around?

The space if left for my compressor is small, and if I need to service it; change the oil, fix the mag starter, clean the dust off the cooler, it would be nice to be able to move it out from the corner it is getting parked in. I will be running hard lines soon but I will jsut have a connection I can easily remove. So it will not be a frequent thing to move my compressor and it would never be run while out of its home corner.

I'm going to be mounting cabinets on the wall just above my compressor, so I'll need to move it out of the way for installation. It would be nice to be able to move it to sweep or mop the area underneath it as well. I like a clean shop, as I'm sure many here do.

The guy I bought mine from left it on the original shipping pallet. We carried it home in the bed of my friends truck and I did not get the electricity wired up in time so I left it on its side I knew that once it was stood up and all the oil was back at the bottom I was not going to lay it back over so I went to the tractor supply and bought four all steel pivoting casters @ 3.99 each and about 3/4 of a pound of hardware for about 4.50.It took about thirty minutes total and it makes it a dream. My drain took a dump on me and all I did was disconnect the hose to the hard pipe and roll it out. Everything was right there no trying to contort myself in to that corner. I says you do it.

4lug39 , is that a 60 gallon tank ? any idea of the weight of the unit ?

I dont think i would want to do that with a 80-120 gallon upright at a top heavy 600-1000lbs.

Before any of the big heavy compressor owners start thinking about putting a unit on wheels I would look at a cherry picker / engine lift to use to move if need be for the once in a great wile need to move.

I put my load leveler on my engine lift and hooked it to my 80 gal compressor to take it off the pallet and to place it in the corner of the shop where it sits today. If need be i can hook up the engine lift again and un-do 4 bolts ,an air line and power wire to move . Being hard wired in it would still be a pain to unhook the power each and every time.

Roospike, It is a 60 gallon tank. I'm not saying that I push it all over the garage but when I need to move it they are great. The casters are rated @ 350 lbs each.
