Compressor outlet size question

Haven't decided yet on my compressor piping: Rapid Air or metal/copper, but in the meantime I need some air for a small project.

I think I need to install a ****** then a ball valve followed by a temporary regulator/filter.

I measured the outlet size, and it's 1".

Do I need to purchase a 3/4" ******? I'm thinking 3/4" is the I.D., but 1" is the O.D. ?

Also does it make a difference if the ****** is brass, galvanized or what ever (except PVC of course) since it the threads will be wrapped with Teflon tape ?

I would also go with 3/4" black iron. I prefer Apollo valves. I can get them the same cost as the Pro Line generic stuff from big box stores at my local plumbing supply.

that's a 3/4" pipe ****** you need. brass or black iron . galvanized is not recommended on air as the galv coating can flake off

And black iron can rust. Galvanized isn't any worse for an air system than black iron. That is why god created air filters......

This is why copper is the best choice.

I find using a hydraulic hose with 3/4 male pipe thread is best. This will help with any vibration and will help in poor pipefitting skills. You can also find swivel ends which will eliminate the need for a union.

I recently did something similar to mine. I reduced that bushing down to 1/2" and ran hard black pipe up to a 1/2" filter/reg and then mounted an old hose reel on the wall with a 50' 1/2" hose. This way I can have adequate air for my 3/4" impact or I can just use my 3/8" hose with my smaller tools. I also still have the original 1/4" regulator off the top to use. If you properly pipe it with enough pitch and have a leg off that to drain the water, it won't rust any time soon. And drain the tank daily of course.

It is more expensive, and the same filter that protects tools from galvanizing flaking off will also catch the rust. ;-)

You can also sometimes find ball valves with a male threaded shaft on one (or both) sides, so you wouldn't have to buy the ******. One less piece to install and one less place for an air leak!
