so I picked this old compressor and it sure needs a plumbing job!

there is a 1/4 copper line from the tank inlet to a pressure relief valve on the pressure switch, I assume that's supposed to release cylinder pressure when the pressure switch stops the motor. But its hooked into the main line to the tank.

there does seem to be any check valve anywhere between the tank and pump, if I remove the safety release on the pump, the entire system drains

im thinking that a check valve should be added between the pump and tank, then pressure release line should go between the pump and check valve

im going to replace the modern motor with an older motor(1725 rpm), what speed should the pump run at? now its running at 575 with a 1/2 hp

You are correct, compressor, TEE 1/4" copper tubing then a check valve in the tank. Take a look at Granger, they make brass check valves with a port to hook the tubing directly to the check valve, no TEE needed. The check valve seat may be either Teflon or some type of rubber, I have seen both, which makes it very quiet.
