dad has a nice campbell hausfeld 60 gallon 7 hp compressor, it's about 10 years old. recently, it has been blowing off pressure when the motor shuts off. it is leaking out of a black line which appears to be plastic. the elbow is what is leaking. it almost appears to be a burst disk or pressure relief valve. if you look in the attached picture, it is the black plastic line which connects below the on/off switch

if you see that little black line that runs from under the motor support, that runs into the tank and to the 90* plastic fitting that is under the switch. it is definitely plastic, it moves around. at the top of that 90* there is a piece of the elbow that is opened up, that is where the air is coming from. only does it when it isn't running. while running it shuts off.

I would bet the is the tank pressure sensing line that starts and stops the compressor at the pre set load unload setpoints. Errr in this case preset run/ stop set points. Plastic is never a good idea on a CDA system . I would replace the plastic with a copper line and flare fittings for saftey sake.

Your problem is the tank check valve on the OTHER end of that black line. The line you believe is leaking is not - it is a discharge pressure purge line and it is supposed to vent the pressure between the tank check valve and the compressor head anytime the compressor is stopped. If it leaks continuously then the check valve in the tank inlet port has failed.

i live in a rural town, only place like it within 45 minutes is tractor supply. if they don't have it i'll just order one online somewhere. no big deal. don't need the compressor too much this time of year anyways.

I find McMaster to be really fast and reasonably priced and their shipping is very reasonable. I recently ordered $300 worth of shop supplies and shipping on the whole thing was $6.95.

Glad you are on the right track and that I could help. Please post back when you fix it.

for those searching, it was the check valve that went bad.

thanks to GeneralDisorder for the helpful info!
