My freebie air compressor, Ingersoll rand T10 is making a gosh awful noise like a rod knock from the compressor pump. Is this normal for starting up?
I got it for free because of the motor was toast. So I installed a H.F. 3 hp 220 motor and I am hearing this rod knock from the compressor pump. Oil level is good. It builds air pressure and should I get ready for the pump to explode?
Thank you for your help.

I would. If you want to keep it l would stop using it and take it apart to see where the noise is coming from. Knocking noises are usually bearings.

I had what I thought was a loud rod knock. Took it apart and it had inhaled a part of one of the reeds. Got on top of the piston and made a LOT of noise.

Take it apart and see what you can find. Maybe not a fatal problem?

Mu IR compressor had a knock when I got it , thought the worst, but it was a loose pulley on the shaft, quick fix and it's been pumping air for 20 hrs now.

I got a free craftsman old school big 2 stage compressor once.

IT had a knock but I still ran it until i got a backup.

The rod big end was getting bigger!
